Did you know prostate cancer affects one in six men?

Each year, there are more than 200,000 newly diagnosed prostate cancers in the United States.

Prostate cancer is the most common nonskin cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in males. This accounts for an estimated 33,000 deaths every year.

Those with a family history of prostate cancer and African-American men are at an even higher risk.

Screening for prostate cancer saves lives and can prevent the pain and suffering of advanced prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer usually grows slowly initially and, if detected before symptoms develop, can be cured with treatment.

Screening for prostate cancer involves two simple tests, a digital rectal exam and a blood test called PSA, or prostatic specific antigen.

PSA has recently been criticized in the media. The American Urological Association believes that this has been a great disservice to patients.

Since PSA has been used in screening for prostate cancer, there has been over a 40 percent reduction in death from prostate cancer.

When used appropriately, PSA has been shown to provide significant improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

The decision to test for prostate cancer requires a discussion with your physician about the benefits and risks of testing.

The American Urological Association recommends that men between the ages of 40 and 70 should talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening.

Men less than age 40 rarely develop prostate cancer, and most men over age 70 are unlikely to develop symptoms or die from undiagnosed prostate cancer.

Some men with prostate cancer can be safely monitored without treatment.

Proceeding to active treatment is a decision that a man should discuss in detail with his urologist.

GAAR panel expanded to cover non-resident tax payers | Sarkaritel ...

New Delhi, Sep 1 The government Saturday expanded the scope of the expert committee on General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) to include all non-resident tax payers, even as the committee submitted its draft report to the finance ministry.

The announcement to increase the scope of GAAR committee headed by tax expert Parthasarthi Shome, was made after the panel in its report suggested changes in the Income Tax Act and Rules.

A finance ministry release said: ?The draft report has recommended certain amendments in the Income-tax Act, 1961; guidelines to be prescribed under the Income-tax Rules, 1962; circular to clarify GAAR provisions along with illustrations; and other measures to improve tax administration specifically oriented towards GAAR matters?.

?It has now been decided to expand the scope of the terms of reference of the committee to include all non-resident tax payers instead of only FIIs,? it said.

The government had last month asked the expert committee to examine the applicability of the amendment on taxation of non-resident transfer of assets where the underlying asset is in India, in the context of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) operating in the country purely for portfolio investment.

The draft report now has been placed in public domain inviting suggestions and opinion of the various stakeholders.

The stakeholders, the release said, can submit their comments by Sep 15.

In view of concerns expressed by investors, the government has already postponed implementation of GAAR by a year to April 2013.

The committee on GAAR was constituted in July to address concerns of foreign and domestic investors on retrospective tax laws.

Things to Consider When You Receive a Lump Sum | Sell ...

Things to Consider When You Receive a Lump Sum

If you are currently receiving payments through a structured settlement and are interested in receiving some or all of your future payments now, 123 Lumpsum can help. We are a specialty finance company that applies expertise in institutional financing, underwriting, and the law to purchase future cash flows for our clients. Call us toll-free at 877.Y.NOT.NOW (966-8669) or request a free structured settlement quote online.

We would like to provide you with a few things to keep in mind as you prepare to receive your lump sum. Prior to receiving your lump sum, you should be prepared with a game plan. Financial experts recommend the following:

  • Don?t start giving away your money. There may be some financially needy people in your life, but before you share your wealth with them, take stock of your own financial priorities, and attend to them first.
  • Don?t immediately purchase big ticket items. Use financial software to create a budget and see what you can reasonably afford now given your long term financial goals.
  • Don?t blindly invest your money on the ?next big thing.? Get advice from several investment professionals and consider it carefully before you move forward.
  • Do not start a business without adequate preparation. The thought of being your own boss is tempting. However, purchasing a restaurant if you don?t have a background in the food service industry may be premature.
  • Don?t do anything you wouldn?t normally do. Chances are that up to this point you have been living a frugal lifestyle, and you actually shouldn?t change it too drastically. Maintaining good spending habits will make your money last longer. This is not to say you shouldn?t treat yourself on occasion, but why switch to name brands if you have always been fine with generic ones?
  • Don?t spend money or undertake any obligations prior to actually receiving your lump sum.

Overall, you should allow yourself some time to think things through and carefully plan what you will do with your lump sum in order to obtain the maximum benefit from it.

Hundreds wait in line for tickets to President Obama's CU-Boulder speech

If you go

What: Campaign rally featuring President Barack Obama

When: Gates open at 10 a.m.; Obama expected between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Where: Norlin Quad, University of Colorado campus, Boulder

Tickets: Free tickets available from campaign offices at 2206 Pearl St., Boulder; 1159 13th St., Boulder; 1811 Hover St., Longmont; 1110 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville; 6821 W. 120th Ave. Unit C, Broomfield

It was an earlier morning than usual for many University of Colorado students Thursday, as hundreds filed onto Norlin Quad to pick up their tickets to see President Barack Obama at a campus rally on Sunday.

Obama campaign volunteers began handing the tickets out at 10 a.m., but most of the people in line started their day much earlier.

Freshmen Samantha Vidal and Nicholas Lacomb arrived on the quad at 5 a.m. to secure the first spots in line, but they said it was well worth it to see Obama speak.

"I want to take advantage of the opportunity to see the president," Vidal said. "I'm pretty sold on voting for him, so I really want to support him and find other people who share my opinions and have the same interests."

Lacomb said he is still undecided on who he will be voting for in November.

"I just want to hear what he has to say," he said.

Many of the people in line were CU freshmen who will be voting in their first ever election, and many were excited about the chance to get to see one of the candidates in person.

"He has a reputation as a really good speaker, so I want to see how he handles himself," freshman Griffin Midler said.

Ryan Noble said he was waiting in line at 8:45 a.m. even though he didn't have any classes scheduled Thursday.

"It's why I got out of bed this morning," he said.

While many will see Obama for the first time Sunday, others are back for more after witnessing the president speak at the Coors Events Center on campus in April in what was only the second time a sitting U.S. president has come to Boulder.

"The last time he was here it was to talk about student loans, so this time I hope his speech is more geared toward the campaign," said freshman Jonathan Cooper, who skipped his high school classes in Longmont to see Obama in April. "It's really, really cool he's coming again."

Senior Hunter Coohill also saw Obama in April, but, as a "big Democrat," he said he was looking forward to an encore.

"I hope he comes back whenever he wants," Coohill said. "He's an excellent speaker and I want to hear what he has to say."

Fellow seniors Ember Patterson, Becca Manning and Taylor Meyers all said Obama's speaking prowess was the reason they plan to attend Sunday's rally.

"I love to watch him on TV, but I've never seen him in person," Manning said. "I just like to hear him talk."

Added Meyers: "It's historic being here. I want to be able to say I was there watching."

It wasn't just CU students who were excited to get their tickets to see the president.

At an Obama campaign office on Pearl Street, Boulder resident Alexa Sander said she jumped at the chance to see the president after missing his April visit.

"I was disappointed last time, but I think that made me extra excited to have him come back," she said. "I think it's great we have the opportunity to see the him in Boulder where I live. I'm definitely looking forward to the atmosphere and all the excitement."

Margaret Peterson said she heard good things from other people who saw Obama in person and wanted to experience it for herself.

"I want to see what he's like in person," she said. "I heard he's a really good speaker. I just thought it was something I should do."

Kiley McInroy, a recent CU graduate, said she and her friend were among the few students allowed to film Obama's April visit, and she is hoping to do the same at his Norlin speech so she can finish her video.

"We want to create something we can put online that will get students more involved," she said. "A lot of students say, 'Oh it doesn't matter, they are all puppets so I'm not going to vote.' We are using digital media and trying to get them to see Obama is different."
