Big Bird, Elmo to encourage kids to eat produce

WASHINGTON (AP) — A trip down the grocery store produce aisle could soon feel like a stroll down "Sesame Street."

Under an agreement being announced Wednesday by Michelle Obama, the nonprofit organization behind the popular children's educational program will allow the produce industry to use Elmo, Big Bird and Sesame Street's other furry characters free of charge to help market fruits and veggies to kids.

The goal is to boost consumption of fruits and vegetables among children who often turn up their noses at them.

Sesame Workshop is waiving its licensing fee for two years under an arrangement with the Produce Marketing Association and the Partnership for a Healthier America, a nonprofit organization that supports the first lady's nationwide "Let's Move" campaign to reduce childhood obesity in the U.S.

Starting as early as next spring, eggplant could be brought to you by Elmo, Big Bird could be pushing the beets and the Cookie Monster could become the Celery Monster. The produce association will develop guidelines for how members should use the characters.

Shoppers and, any children who accompany them, can expect to see their favorite Sesame Street characters on bagged, boxed and individual pieces of produce.

"Just imagine what will happen when we take our kids to the grocery store, and they see Elmo and Rosita and the other Sesame Street Muppets they love up and down the produce aisle," Mrs. Obama was to say. "Imagine what it will be like to have our kids begging us to buy them fruits and vegetables instead of cookies, candy and chips."

The collaboration between Sesame Workshop and the produce association will show kids that "fruits and vegetables don't just make us feel good, they taste good, too," she said.

Sam Kass, the executive director of "Let's Move," applauded Sesame Workshop for agreeing to waive its licensing fee, which is a major source of income.

"For them to step in and do this is a really big thing," said Kass, who also is an assistant White House chef.

Sherrie Westin, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Sesame Workshop, said it was too early to say how much revenue would be lost. Westin said waiving the licensing fee is not normal practice, but that the deal gives the company another outlet to push the healthier-eating messages that appear on its program.

"It would be a shame not to use them to that end," she said of the Sesame Street characters.

Larry Soler, president and chief executive of the partnership, said kids younger than 5 don't eat enough fruits and vegetables, and that it gets worse as children get older. He said the agreement hopefully will "drive excitement" and interest in fruits and vegetables that might not otherwise be there.

The announcement will be the first since a White House summit on food marketing to children that Mrs. Obama convened last month, where she urged a broad range of companies to do more to promote healthier foods to youngsters.

Sesame Street characters Elmo and Rosita were joining her for the announcement. Afterward, the first lady was taking them to her produce garden on the South Lawn for the annual fall harvest. They were to be helped by children who attend schools in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Priceless Italian Treasure Is Shown Off In Rare Exhibition

A necklace of Saint Januarius, in gold, silver and precious stones, is displayed in Rome. The riches from a treasure trove in Naples that is said to be worth more than the British crown jewels.

Dazzling with diamonds, emeralds and gold, 70 pieces of treasure — said to be some of the most valuable in the world — have been transported from a vault in a Naples cathedral to a museum in Rome. They'll stay there until February, marking the first time they've ever been displayed outside of Naples.

The head of the foundation organizing the Treasure of San Gennaro exhibition tells the BBC the collection is "of incalculable worth, both historically and artistically, greater than that of the British crown jewels or the Russian imperial crown."

The collection officially began in 1526, when the city of Naples called upon its patron saint, fourth-century bishop San Gennaro (known in English as Januarius), for help. The BBC reports:

"In the 1520s, when Naples was beset by disease, war and the frequent eruption of the nearby Mount Vesuvius, Neapolitans pledged to build a chapel to San Gennaro and safeguard the donated treasure, in return for the saint's protection.

"'The city was on its last legs, but the people of Naples knew which saint to turn to,' said the exhibition's curator Paolo Jorio. 'They voted that, if Saint Januarius helped them, they would dedicate a new treasure chapel to him.'"

Since then, it has acquired more than 21,000 pieces. One of the most elaborate acquisitions is a necklace made up of several pieces of jewelry and stones donated over centuries, such as a cross donated by Napoleon.

The exhibition in Rome shows off some of the collection's highlights, including:

  • A golden chalice donated by Pope Pius IX in 1849

  • An elaborately bejeweled mitre — the ceremonial headdress of bishops — including more than 3,500 precious stones, created in 1713

  • Diamond earrings donated by a commoner in gratitude for surviving a plague in 1844 (Reuters calls them "relatively humble")

Poor refining margins drive profit down at Total

PARIS (AP) — French oil company Total said Thursday that net income fell 10 percent in the July-to-September period, partially due to poor refining margins amid a sluggish European economy.

The company said that net profit was 2.8 billion euros ($3.9 billion) in the quarter, the first in its fiscal year. Revenue was 46.7 billion euros, a drop of 6 percent. Still, both figures were above consensus expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet.

While Brent crude oil prices were fairly stable in the quarter, refining margins — the profit from converting oil into useable fuel — plummeted 79 percent, as a poor economy cut into energy demands.

The company said its profit was also hit by higher exploration costs as part of a more active drilling program.

Investors were disappointed. In early trading on the Paris bourse, Total's share dropped 1 percent to 44.78 euros.

Jeffrey Katzenberg's Secret Call to Hillary Clinton: Hollywood's 2016 Support Assured

This story first appeared in the Nov. 8 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Several months ago, Jeffrey Katzenberg reached out to Hillary Clinton to assure her that if she runs for president in 2016, he will support her.

Katzenberg is one of Hollywood's premier political kingmakers and one of the Democratic Party's top national fundraisers, so the call had to be a welcome one. For Clinton, who failed to secure his support for her unsuccessful run at the Democratic nomination in 2008, it also was crucial.

PHOTOS: Team Hillary Clinton: Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen and Her 2016 Supporters

Eight years ago, the bitter struggle between Clinton loyalists and Barack Obama disciples riveted Hollywood. It divided families, neighbors, business partners and friends. Nicole Avant, later President Obama's ambassador to the Bahamas, split with her father, music executive Clarence; her brother
Alex; and her godfather, Quincy Jones, all of whom went with Clinton (as did her future husband, Netflix's Ted Sarandos). Next-door neighbors Irena and Mike Medavoy (Obama) and Haim and Cheryl Saban (Clinton) found themselves on opposite sides of the fence. Clinton supporter Rob Reiner broke with his "second father," Norman Lear, an early Obama fan.

Even the DreamWorks troika split apart, with David Geffen and Katzenberg — a once-close supporter of Bill and Hillary Clinton — siding with Obama, and Steven Spielberg straddling the fence, raising money for both.

PHOTOS: From Harvey Weinstein to Cher: The Clintons' Close Relationship With Hollywood

This time, of course, is different. For most Democrats (and not just in Hollywood), Hillary 2016 is the only viable prospect in an increasingly contentious political climate where both parties likely benefit from the strongest brand name it can put forth. And Clinton, who has not yet announced whether she will run in 2016, will need Hollywood's deep pockets to help her amass the kind of war chest necessary to survive the Republican Party onslaught, where names from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are being floated as contenders.

In other words, Hollywood and Hillary need each other.

Katzenberg already is conveying the message both publicly and privately that he's committed to her. "She did an amazing job as secretary of state," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "She has really shown herself to be a great statesman. The four years of seasoning has really made her the best-qualified candidate out there today, and I'm happy to support her."

PHOTOS: 20 Biggest Political Players in Hollywood

Katzenberg, according to a source close to him, was "favorably impressed" by Clinton during her phone call with him. As one of the biggest financial backers of the super PAC Priorities USA Action, which raised a war chest of $79 million and supported Obama in 2012, the DreamWorks Animation CEO is crucial not only for his money but also for his ability to mobilize others.

"The center of power in the Democratic Party in terms of money really has moved to Katzenberg," says one top national Democratic strategist. "The most important person you should get is Jeffrey. He should be her No. 1 priority."

A close No. 2? Geffen. His brutal 2007 assessment of the Clintons to Maureen Dowd in The New York Times now is infamous; in Dowd's column, he called Hillary "incredibly polarizing" and cited the "ease" with which they lie. Fast-forward, however, to July, when the now-reclusive mogul told Fortune that he would "absolutely" support Clinton for president. (Geffen did not respond to THR's request for further comment.)

STORY: NBC Scraps Hillary Clinton Miniseries

Top music manager Irving Azoff (a self-described "Hillary loyalist from the start") sees a Hollywood pragmatism at work. "A lot of people in Hollywood are not 100 percent thrilled with Obama and think we need a more centrist Democrat," he says. "The Clinton brand of the Democratic Party has been the most successful in what? Fifty years? Why wouldn't people return to that?"

And they are. In droves. Clues to the will-she-or-won't-she question might begin to be revealed Oct. 30, when Hillary is scheduled to attend a luncheon fundraiser at billionaire Haim Saban's Beverly Hills home for Virginia gubernatorial candidate and longtime Clinton loyalist Terry McAuliffe. Tickets to the event cost $15,000 a person or $25,000 a couple. Later that evening, Clinton is expected to headline a gala at the Beverly Wilshire hotel for Oceana, a key cause for Ted Danson, a longtime supporter.

She'll be back in early November to be honored by the Mexican American Leadership Initiative at a USC gathering. Meanwhile, on Nov. 11 in New York, Clinton will be honored by Malaria No More, a group co-founded by media mogul and longtime Clinton supporter Peter Chernin.

For now, the town's Democratic fundraisers are not taking meetings with any other presidential hopeful as they wait for Clinton's decision, says UTA managing director Jay Sures, another early Obama supporter. "Hollywood in general likes to place their money on the winner," says Sures, "and when there is a clear-cut leader, people will think twice about making donations to candidates they don't think have a shot."

And in this reconciliation, both sides potentially will end up winning.

ANALYSIS: NBC's Hillary Clinton Nightmare: Who Loses Most

In 2012, Hollywood donated $6.5 million directly to Obama's re-election campaign, plus millions more to Democratic Party committees and super PACs. "There's going to be so much money amassed against her, she's going to have to take the funds wherever she can get them," says longtime Clinton friend and Designing Women producer Harry Thomason. That's inescapable, he adds, even though getting cash from the entertainment industry sometimes can be a mixed blessing. In Clinton's case, opponents could actually exploit the attacks of those who had previously turned on her — notably Geffen. "It's sort of a two-for-one," Thomason says. "You get to punish the candidate and you get to punish Hollywood."

Clinton's resurgent influence recently was seen when Academy Award-winning documentary director Charles Ferguson dropped plans for a Hillary Clinton film after her friends and associates made it clear they would never speak to him because the Clintons didn't want them to. A planned NBC miniseries was canceled after protests from the GOP, though it is very likely the Clintons opposed it, too, for the possible salacious content.

To put it plainly, the romance is back on.

WORLD SERIES WATCH: Red Sox beat Cards, win title

BOSTON (AP) — A look at Game 6 of the World Series at Fenway Park on Wednesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Boston Red Sox:

___

CHAMPS: Koji Uehara closes it out with a strikeout and the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6, clinching a championship on their own field at Fenway Park for the first time in 95 years.

___

THREE OUTS AWAY: Brandon Workman pitches a perfect eighth inning to protect a 6-1 lead for the Red Sox.

Singing, chanting crowd can hardly wait.

___

JOB WELL DONE: John Lackey exits with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh inning, tips his cap to the cheering crowd at Fenway.

Cardinals had cut it to 6-1 on Carlos Beltran's run-scoring single, but Junichi Tazawa keeps it right there by retiring Allen Craig on a grounder.

___

RUNNING OUT OF TIME: Matt Holliday flies out with runners at the corners to end the fifth, and the Cardinals are 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position tonight. That makes them 6 for 40 (.150) in the Series. They've stranded six overall tonight.

St. Louis caught a break in the fourth when Gold Glove second baseman Dustin Pedroia botched a grounder that should have been an inning-ending double play. John Lackey, however, pitched out of trouble again by retiring Matt Adams on a liner to left and throwing a called third strike past David Freese.

___

OPENING UP: Even slumping Stephen Drew gets in on the act with a home run on the first pitch of the fourth. Red Sox lead 4-0 against Michael Wacha.

Jacoby Ellsbury also tees off for a rocket that hits the low wall in right-field near the 380-foot sign. It's a double, and Wacha gets pulled after an intentional walk to Big Papi that puts runners at the corners with two outs.

It's the third walk for Ortiz tonight — two intentional. Cardinals have obviously seen enough of him in this Series.

Ellsbury scores on Mike Napoli's single off Lance Lynn, and a walk to Jonny Gomes brings up Shane Victorino with the bases loaded again. Just an RBI single this time to make it 6-0.

___

BOBBY V: Wonder what Bobby Valentine is thinking tonight. Bet he's watching, maybe at his restaurant in Connecticut?

___

BAGS FULL: Shane Victorino does it again with the bases loaded.

His three-run double high off the Green Monster gives Boston a 3-0 lead in the third inning. It was Victorino's first hit since that go-ahead grand slam in the ALCS clincher against Detroit.

Victorino was 0 for 10 in the Series before connecting. He sat out the previous two games with a stiff back, but returned for this one and was dropped from his regular No. 2 spot to sixth in the lineup.

Jonny Gomes was hit by a pitch to load the bases — the first batter rookie Michael Wacha had ever hit in his career.

Victorino, the master of getting hit by pitches, standing almost on top of the plate. He gets ahead 2-0 in the count before pouncing on a 2-1 fastball.

Wacha doesn't have it tonight. In truth, his stuff didn't look as sharp in Game 2 at Fenway as it did during the NL playoffs, but he held Boston in check and won 4-2.

___

DIDN'T MISS A BEAT: Is anyone else amazed at how consistently hard Allen Craig has hit the ball in this Series after missing so much time with that sprained foot? DH, pinch-hitting, hasn't mattered. He's been right on Red Sox pitching. Now 2 for 2 in Game 6 and 6 for 14 in the Series.

___

QUICK WORK: John Lackey needs only five pitches to get through the third inning — even though Matt Carpenter singled with one out.

Daniel Descalso looked at three straight strikes to start the inning. After the single by Carpenter, Carlos Beltran grounded into a double play.

___

EARLY ESCAPES: Both starters pitch out of trouble in the second inning.

St. Louis put two on with none out but failed to score. John Lackey threw a two-out wild pitch that pushed the runners to second and third, then struck out Jon Jay.

That left the Cardinals 6 for 36 with runners in scoring position during the Series after setting a franchise record with a .330 mark in those situations during the regular season.

You get the feeling if the Cardinals can break through for one big hit at the right time in this game, the floodgates might open. But without it, they'll go home lamenting their lack of clutch hitting in this Series.

Matt Adams flied out to deep left, but David Freese skied to shallow center on a hittable breaking ball. Tim McCarver on Fox notes Freese, the hometown star for St. Louis in the 2011 Series, has stranded 15 runners this postseason.

Forgive us, but Freese has looked frozen all Series.

Lackey and Boston manager John Farrell all fired up.

Boston put two on to start the bottom of the second and failed to score, too. Chose not to bunt with rookie Xander Bogaerts. Not a surprise — the Red Sox don't like to sacrifice.

Wacha got two foul popups and a strikeout to keep it scoreless.

___

PACKED HOUSE: Man, oh man, are they fired up in Boston.

Red Sox looking to clinch a World Series title on their own field at fabled Fenway Park for the first time in 95 years, a stretch that's lasted from Babe Ruth to Big Papi.

Needless to say, tickets have been going for quite a pretty penny.

To do it, Boston will have to overcome rookie sensation Michael Wacha, who is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in four postseason starts. Can the kid do it again — under save-the-season pressure in this electric environment — and force a Game 7?

Red Sox right-hander John Lackey is trying to become the first pitcher to start and win the clinching game of a World Series for two teams. He won Game 7 of the 2002 World Series for the Anaheim Angels as a rookie against San Francisco.

And we're underway in Game 6. Lackey works a 1-2-3 first inning, helped out by a tough play from second baseman Dustin Pedroia in short right field.

___

BALLPARK BUZZ: Fenway Park was jumping early as fans poured into the old yard, hoping for a big night. Program vendors loudly reminded folks to pick up their souvenirs on the way in.

The ballpark organist tried to set a lucky tone, playing "This Magic Moment" and "Daydream Believer" and "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover" during batting practice.

Great version of the national anthem by local band The Dropkick Murphys. Felt like last call at a packed Irish pub.

That came right after Red Sox greats Carlton Fisk and Luis Tiant threw out the first balls. Fisk, still a king at Fenway for the home run that won Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, got right in the spirit that has taken over this team — before his toss, he put on a playful beard for the ceremonies.
