Stocks struggle after durable goods data

Stocks were struggling Wednesday after a weaker-than-expected reading on durable goods orders.

Futures had been in solidly higher territory as several governments, including the United States, considered releasing oil reserves to ease high prices, seen as an obstacle to recovery.

New orders for U.S. manufactured goods rose less than expected in February and a gauge of future business investment also fell short of forecasts, the Commerce Department said.

"This number is another piece of the puzzle that seems to be coming together to form a picture that the economy is slowly improving, but it is definitely a halting recovery where we're not accelerating to any great degree," said Liam Dalton, president of Axiom Capital Management Inc in New York.

Crude oil futures fell about 1 percent, weighed by the possible release of strategic oil reserves by the U.S. and European nations. Oil prices are up 7.8 percent this year on Middle East tensions.

Analysts said further upside in the S&P 500 was limited after gains of more than 12 percent this year. The benchmark index is on track for its best quarter since the third quarter of 2009.

Large-cap shares, many already at 52-week highs, could continue to outperform as money managers dress up their portfolios ahead of the quarter-end on Friday.

A total of 175 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange hit new 52-week highs Tuesday, including Dow components Home Depot Inc, Walt Disney Co and International Business Machines Corp.

Much of the market's recent gains have come after accommodative monetary policies by central banks globally, including the U.S. Federal Reserve.

On Tuesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, asked in an ABC News interview about the potential for more quantitative easing, said the Fed wasn't taking any options off the table.

Family Dollar Stores Inc reported second-quarter earnings that beat expectations, but same-store sales rose less than the company forecast.

Late Tuesday, both Sealy Corp and PVH Corp reported quarterly earnings that beat expectations. Sealy rose 12 percent to $2.10 in premarket trading, while PVH Corp was up 0.7 percent at $90.40.

Apple Inc will offer buyers of its new iPad in Australia a refund after it was accused of misleading advertising. The stock hit a new all-time high of $616.28 and closed with a market capitalization of $572.92 billion.

U.S. stocks retreated from near four-year highs on Tuesday, though gains in technology names limited the Nasdaq's decline.

What James Cameron saw 6.8 miles deep in Mariana Trench (+video)

Returning from humankind's first solo dive to the deepest spot in the ocean, filmmaker James?Cameron said he saw no obvious signs of life that might inspire creatures in his next "Avatar" movie but was awestruck by the "complete isolation."

Skip to next paragraph Director James Cameron dove 6.8 miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, the deepest dive in 50 years by any man.

The Oscar-winning director and undersea explorer said his record-setting expedition to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, 7 miles beneath the surface of the western Pacific, not only capped seven years of painstaking preparation but was the "culmination of a lifelong dream."

Cameron, 57, spoke to reporters in a telephone conference call from a yacht en route back to shore from the dive site hours after returning safely to the surface from his voyage to the floor of the immense undersea canyon at a point some 300 miles (480 miles) southwest of the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

He described a flat, desolate landscape, 50 times larger than the Grand Canyon, "devoid of sunlight, devoid of any heat, any warmth," where the pressure was so great that it squeezed the height of his submersible vehicle by several inches.

He looked out on the sea floor, illuminated by the lights on his submarine, through a small window.

"When I got to the bottom ... it was completely featureless and uniform," he said. "My feeling was one of complete isolation from all of humanity. ... More than anything, (it's) realizing how tiny you are down in this big, vast, black, unknown and unexplored place."

The only free-swimming creatures he saw near the bottom were tiny shrimp-like arthropods, but little else in the way of life was immediately visible. Cameronsaid further exploration would be required to discern what other organisms might dwell there.

Asked if he encountered anything he might use in his next feature film, he replied, "I can't answer that question right now." But he said, "Anything that I've ever seen underwater goes into the hopper of imagination that gets refracted out into the things that I write."

He also recounted the discomfort of his seven-hour journey into the ocean depths and back, wedged into a cramped, cold capsule at the bottom of a specially designed vehicle that stands 24 feet tall and descends upright and rotating at the speed of about 500 feet per minute.

The craft functioned flawlessly, he said, except for an unexplained failure of the hydraulic system that idled the vehicle's robot arm and prevented Cameron from collecting most of the biological and geologic samples he had hoped to retrieve.

NOT GIVING UP MOVIES

Better known as the director of such blockbuster films as "Titanic," "Aliens" and "Avatar," Cameron made history on Monday as the first person to venture alone to the so-called Challenger Deep, the lowest-known point of the Earth's crust, nearly 36,000 feet beneath the ocean surface.

He also was the first individual to make that journey since 1960, when the only other explorers to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench - U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and the late Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard - spent 20 minutes there together in the submersible craft Trieste.

Cameron said he was inspired as a boy by the original feat of Piccard and Walsh - a mentor and part of his support team at the surface - and by the adventures of French undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, to take up diving at age 16, even though he lived "in a small, landlocked village in rural Canada."

"Most people probably know me as a filmmaker, but really the ocean and the idea of exploration has been the stronger driver in my life," he said.

By his count, Cameron has made 72 ocean dives in various submersible crafts over the years, including 12 trips during the making of "Titanic" to the famed shipwreck in the North Atlantic.

Still,?Cameron insisted he had no plans to give up his movie career, saying, "I'm going to be turning my attention to 'Avatar 2' and 'Avatar 3' as soon as I finish up with this expedition."

His venture to the Challenger Deep is being chronicled for a 3-D film set for theatrical release and for subsequent broadcast on the National Geographic Channel.

Steve Aoki Brings The Heat To Miami's Ice Palace

MIAMI — The Steve Aoki Experience hit Ice Palace in downtown Miami a little after 3:30 a.m. in the early Saturday hours, and the Dim Mak chairman didn't disappoint. He powered through a set loaded with new music and the madness that fans have come to love from his live shows.

In the lead-up to his Ultra Music Festival show slated for Sunday (March 25), Aoki treated the Ice Palace crowd to champagne showers and shots of Grey Goose. He also brought along some very special friends: Datsik, who'll hit the road this summer on Dim Mak Records' Deadmeat Tour; and Alan Strovich, who recently finished a dramatic dubstep remix of "Ladi Dadi." (One of Aoki's biggest tracks, his 2011 "Ladi" features singer Wynter Gordon.)

Many of the tracks Aoki played on Saturday were from Dim Mak's Miami Winter Music Conference sampler, which dropped 10 days ago on Beatport. Those included the banging new gems "Dance" from Spencer & Hill and Dirtyloud; "Turn Up the Volume" with Joachim Garraud and Autoerotique; and Aoki's smash tag-team with Tiësto on "Tornado."

It was a crazy show to say the least. And with his date on the Main Stage at Ultra just hours away, it proved to be an exciting prelude to what we predict will be one of the most impressive stage dives at UMF.

???? Ted Cramer is a legend in country radio and has been involved with all aspects of?his chosen profession?for 58 years now. He was inducted into the Country DJ ?Hall of Fame? in 1999 and has won enough awards to fill a trophy case.
The much-traveled Cramer is currently with KFKF and sat down to answer questions for Bottom Line Communications.

?NAME:? Ted Cramer
TITLE:? Currently a part-time deejay for KFKF, Kansas City and the co-host of the Saturday morning ?Country Legends? show on the station.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION?
Eight years now.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BROADCASTING?
I?m currently in my 58th year of broadcasting and 42 of them as a program director.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR CHOSEN FIELD?
I knew at the age of 5 I wanted to go into radio. There was never any question about doing anything else. I was fascinated with it all through school and made it my job to get into it.
WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR PREVIOUS JOBS BEFORE KFKF?
Well, I have had quite a few!! Here you go:
1953-1957?KIMO (1510) in Independence. It was my first commercial job and I was a jock and for a time in 1956 the News Director. That was my first exposure to country music.
1957?LEEX in Lexington, MO for three months.
1957-58 KFEQ radio and TV in Lexington where I was a radio DJ and TV news anchor on Channel 2.
1958-59?Back to KIMO, which changed its call letter to KANS
1959-1961?KCKN in Kansas City. The station was Top 40 when I went there and switched back to country in 1960. I became the program director and pioneered the modern country format.
1961?Program Director at WTAP in Parkersburg, West VA. I also did TV.
1963-1973?I came back to KCKN at PD and put KCKN-FM on the air in 1963 (which is now KFKF).
1969-1973?I was PD also at WUBE in Cincinnati (it was co-owned with KCKN under Kaye-Smith Broadcasting). I turned WUBE into a country station and in 1970 turned WUBE-FM into country.
1974-1977?PD at WOWK/WIGL-FM in Miami, FL and put WIGL on the air in 1976.
1977-1979?PD at WDAF-61 Country and changed the format to country with Randy Michaels.
1979-1981?PD at 610 WTVN in Columbus, OH. (WDAF and WTVN were Taft stations).
1981-1984?PD at WMAQ in Chicago (NBC?s only country station)
1984-1987?Time off, but worked an occasional shift at 61 Country.
1987-1988?Co-owner of WREN in Topeka.
1988-1989?Joined Gaylord Broadcasting as PD at WKY in Oklahoma City.
1989-1991?Transferred to WSM in Nashville as PD.
1991-2004?Returned to WDAF in KC at PD.
2004-Present?KFKF.
MAJOR AWARDS/HONORS?
Inducted into the Country DJ Hall of Fame in 1999. Billboard?s Program Director of the Year in 1988 and R and R ?Station of the Year? in 1978. I?ve been lucky to also have received a number of local awards for public service in various markets throughout the years.
HAS YOUR CHOSEN FIELD CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
No, not really.
MARITAL STATUS?
Married with no children.
WHAT IS THE MOST/LEAST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?
Putting together a sound for a radio station and winning. I?ve been very fortunate over the years having a lot of success at the stations I?ve programmed. Creating the modern country format was one of the most exciting experiences along with making 61 Country an AM success story for almost four decades.
The least rewarding moments of my career were probably created by individuals at radio station home offices who have no idea how to program a local station. Some of the large radio chains have executives in the highest offices who are totally incompetent and make huge problems for local programmers. On top of that local managers have lost the art of good management. It?s sad.
DID YOU EVER CONSIDER ANOTHER CAREER?
No. Radio is really all I ever wanted to do.
DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
No.
WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING YOU HAVE COME ACROSS IN YOUR JOB?
When I went to work at WWOK I was impressed with the signal. At 1260 we covered all of Dade and Broward County and then some. The station was non-directional in the daytime.
After about six months were were enjoying some really good ratings in a market that was not considered the best for country music.
Then one day the chief engineer came to me and said the transmitter work was done and we were to begin using the new pattern from a five-tower array. The day we went to the new pattern I drove the signal and was shocked to learn that the signal now disappeared totally in the far reaches of south Miami and gone in Homestead.
No one ever told me when I went to work there about this situation. WWOK has been non-directional since the station was purchased by Mission Broadcasting three years earlier.
The FCC awarded the license to Mission on the condition that the antenna system be repaired. In spite of losing a significant chunk of potential listeners, we seemed to maintain our position in the market. I still don?t know how!!
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?
I went to grade school at Border Star and E.F. Swinney in Kansas City and then high school at Pembroke-Country Day. I went to college at Kansas and UMKC.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN KC?
My wife and I love to eat out at the various restaurants. We have many very good ones here.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? ANY HOBBIES?
Audio has always been a hobby of mine through the years and I love to listen to various genres of music. I also like to work out since weight has always been a problem with me!
PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT YOU?
I?m a perfectionist. The worst kind of Virgo!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW?
At the moment I like ?The Firm,? ?Grimm? and other action shows. I love the old Perry Mason series.
WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU HAVE INTERVIEWED OR MET?
There are so many!! I?ve interviewed everyone from Patty Andrews to Kenny Chesney. Virtually all of them are interesting in their own way.
WHO DO YOU FOLLOW ON TWITTER?
No one. I don?t Twitter.
WHO WAS THE BIGGEST CELEBRITY YOU EVER INTERVIEWED?
President Harry Truman. Officer Mike Westwood of the Independence Police Dept. was Harry?s bodyguard. Mike and I worked on different projects at KIMO and when I came down to cover the opening of the Truman Library for KFEQ radio and TV Mike got me into interview Harry for about 15 minutes.

From Lady Gaga to kimonos at Japan Fashion Week

TOKYO (Reuters) - From green fashions by a designer who clothed Lady Gaga to a futuristic take on the traditional kimono and a streetwear show that drew more than 10,000 people, Japan's Fashion Week has highlighted the edginess and variety for which Tokyo has long been known.

The spring event was cancelled last year in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, which set off a nuclear crisis that led to power cuts, but the October event was held as scheduled, clearing the way for the current autumn/winter extravaganza.

The Tokyo Runway Show highlighted street styles, an effort to shine a spotlight on Japan's ready-to-wear brands as they also hope to cross into the international scene, in a five-hour production aimed at the country's trend-setting youth.

"I believe that with this show, Japan, as a fashion leader, has the potential to crossover internationally," said Natsuki Kato, a model and actress who strode the catwalk for the event.

Some 15,000 fans came out for the Tokyo Runway, which fell on a national holiday right in the middle of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week that runs until March 24 and featured designs for "real clothes consumers" rather than avant-garde garb.

Among the highlights was an appearance by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, who represented so-called "Harajuku" subculture street fashion, ranging from gothic to outfits that look as if they came straight out of an anime cartoon and is named after the popular Tokyo area popular with youth.

"What makes Harajuku fashion unique is how the girls choose to represent themselves with confidence in a way that's enjoyable -- not just in a 'cute' way, but with some edginess as well." Kyary Pamyu Pamyu told Reuters.

"For example, I have eyeballs and bones on my outfit. It's not just cute but a bit dark too."

KIMONOS, GREEN AND GAGA

In a nod to tradition, third generation kimono designer Jotaro Saito unveiled "Futurism," a collection he hopes will give Japan's traditional dress a modern twist.

Models shuffled along the runway in traditional sandals, and were trussed up in "obi" sashes, but fabrics featured horizontal lines, checks - even the occasional polka-dot.

"Japan has very traditional things, but the world also looks to us for subculture, like anime or computer games. A culture where the new and the classical coexist -- well, I think that's fascinating," Saito said.

Despite the emphasis on fashion, Japan's new reality of post-disaster concerns intruded.

Masanori Morikawa, who created the costume worn by Lady Gaga at the MTV Aid Japan Award 2011, introduced a "green" theme inspired by environmental concerns and the ongoing nuclear crisis at Fukushima, north of Tokyo.

Morikawa, the designer behind the self-directed label "Christian Dada," showed an autumn/winter collection entitled "Lost."

"I was moved by news such as Chernobyl and similar events, and I wanted to express through this collection the question of whether or not we have a place to return to," he said.

Models clad mainly in black walked under green lighting as if under a forest canopy. Along the runway were his trademark punk-inspired leather studs that adorned entire vests, with the new additions of body-hugging green mini dresses.

The show included a visual installation at the end featuring a bird cage that transforms into a disappearing angel -- a scene that hints at rebirth, according to Morikawa.

"I didn't want the angel wings to be in a specific direction but to show that there is a possibility to go in any direction," Morikawa said.
