U.S. Army Wrestlers Loading Up For London

By Joseph Santoliquito

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (CBS) ?
It all starts in ?the room,? a grunt-filled, sweat flying, rubber-floored area where you?re only as good as your competition. For a Greco-Roman wrestler, ?the room? is everything. It?s where they get tested, while testing new moves.

Spenser Mango, Justin Lester and Dremiel Byers are fortunate enough to be part of a great ?room,? as members of the United States Army Greco-Roman wrestling team, perennial national champions that consistently produce Olympic-caliber wrestlers.

Mango, Lester and Byers comprise half of the six-member U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling team that will be leaving for the Olympics next month in London, England. The trio has benefitted greatly from the U.S. Army?s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP).

Their paths to reach this point, however, are as divergent as they are. Mongo and Lester have more similarities than Byers, who is 37 and will be competing in the 120-kilogram division (264 pounds) in what will probably be his last Olympiad.

Byers, the 2002 world champion and silver medalist at the 2009 world championships, is a 10-time U.S. open champion. He?s been in the Army since 1994 and he realizes from his 2008 Olympic experience in Beijing, China that time is ticking. London could be it.

?In 2008, that was definitely an eye opener,? said Byers, from Kings Mountain, North Carolina, who never heard of Greco-Roman wrestling before he entered the army and may be deployed after competing in London. ?The match that I lost I just didn?t execute the things that I was good at and I paid the ultimate price for that. I?ll never forget I came off the mat with my head down and no victory.

?It makes you appreciate the fact that you don?t have time and plan out the opportunities. I had to seize it and bring things with a sense of urgency and didn?t. It?s fuel, believe me, it wasn?t in it for me to win that day, and I knew that, but what bothers me is that I wasn?t at my best. I didn?t show what I could really do and that?s what bothers me. I understand now that anything around the Olympic Games is irrelevant, other than me getting my medal. That?s all I have to do is let loose and I?ll come home with some hardware.?

It gnaws at Byers that his late grandfather wasn?t able to see him compete in 2008?and like Mango and Lester?he hold a greater, deeper sense he?ll carry on the mat.

?What means a lot to me are the soldiers who I used to work with that are over there deployed and check back,? Byers said. ?I had a guy tell me that they?re going on the getonthemat.com and looking me up to see what I?m doing, and that they?re proud that they know me. That means a lot. This guy one I worked with, a tough dude, I mean tough, and he?s in Afghanistan tells ?I?m proud of you. I was like, what! I?m proud of you.? That kind of stuff fuels me. It?s why it?s not going to be just my medal.

There are some people out there that want to see this happen as much as I do; I want that to happen, and I want to make it happen. I plan on being deployed right after London.?

Mango, who placed eighth at the Beijing Games, is headed back at 121 pounds. He doesn?t have the distinguished history as Byers, but he has a general idea of what?s ahead. He was introduced to Greco-Roman wrestling in high school. He went on to graduate with a degree in physical education and a minor in health and nutrition from Northern Michigan University, which sponsors the U.S. Olympic Education Center.

From there, Mango joined the U.S. Army in 2010.

?It?s been a worthwhile move for me,? said Mango, 25, originally from St. Louis, Missouri. ?The staff makes sure that everything is right here, where we have nutritionists and cardio machines. We can focus on training, but we are still soldiers first. I did have to go through basic training and I knew what I was getting into.

?The Army is a different life, but me being a wrestler and an athlete, you have to lead a disciplined life. And for wrestlers, and athletes, it?s an easy transition. I started in 2010 and I?ll be done in 2013, but I plan on re-enlisting and I plan on continuing wrestling for the army. It?s hard to say whether or not I want to make the army a career, and wrestle as long as I can. But I do plan on a deployment, and I?ve known that since I started.?

Mango?s grandfather was a Purple Heart recipient in World War II.

This will be a whole new experience for the 28-year old Lester, who will wrestle at 66 Kg (145? pounds). He was a repeat bronze medalist in the 2006 and ?07 world championships and is a four-time U.S. national champion.

Like Mango and Byers, he came into Greco-Roman late, as opposed to the former Soviet bloc competitors who get introduced to the sport soon after leaving the womb.

?Yes, that?s what we?re up against,? Lester said, laughing. ?The change from freestyle to Greco-Roman is like apples and oranges. You go from being able to attack the whole body to using only the upper body in all aspects. It?s like soccer and basketball. Both are sports that use round balls, but they?re way too different objectives. It?s still wrestling and you?re still competing, even though a lot of techniques are different. I feel Greco-Roman is a little harder because you have to be a little more creative to score.?

And like Mango and Byers, Lester is going to London with more than just himself in mind: ?I have that uniform now and I realize there are a lot of guys across the water doing the ultimate sacrifice for me, for all of us,? he said. ?That?s who we?re doing this for. It?s not just about me anymore. It?s about my family, it?s about my friends, and ultimately, it?s about those guys overseas making that sacrifice for all of us.?

As Syria writhes, divided powers meet in Geneva

GENEVA (Reuters) - Foreign ministers of world powers gather in Geneva on Saturday to try and forge a common strategy to end the bloodshed in Syria, but differences between Russia and the West may thwart them.

Kofi Annan, the former U.N. chief who is special international envoy on Syria, has been hoping for consensus on a plan for a unity government that, by excluding from the leadership figures deemed too divisive, would effectively mean President Bashar al-Assad stepping down.

However, Moscow, a long-time ally of the Syrian strongman and an opponent in principle of what it sees as foreign meddling in domestic sovereignty, has voiced objections to any solution "imposed" on Syria from outside, while the United States and its European and Arab allies see no way ahead with Assad in power.

After Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met over dinner in St. Petersburg on Friday, Lavrov echoed Annan's own earlier upbeat assessment of the chances of agreement, but a senior U.S. official sounded less confident and said differences remained.

"We have a very good chance to find common ground at the conference in Geneva tomorrow," Lavrov told reporters, while also warning against what he called a counterproductive effort to dictate the outcome of a political transformation in advance.

His deputy, Gennady Gatilov, later tweeted Moscow's view of forcing Assad aside: "Our Western partners want to determine themselves the results of the political process in Syria," he said. "However, this is a matter for the Syrians themselves."

Nonetheless, Lavrov said he detected some flexibility on Clinton's part on the eve of talks due to start at U.N. offices in Geneva around 10 a.m. (0800 GMT): "I felt a change in Hillary Clinton's position. There were not ultimatums," he said.

"Not a word was said that the document we will discuss in Geneva cannot be touched," he said, a few hours after senior officials in Geneva failed to arrive at a compromise that could be presented to the foreign ministers for approval on Saturday.

A senior U.S. State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity after the meeting in St. Petersburg, said respect for Annan meant the ministers would still attend.

"There are still areas of difficulty and difference," the official said. But as for the chances of an accord in Geneva, the official added: "We may get there; we may not."

POWERS CONFERENCE

The foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain - will attend Saturday's talks along with counterparts from regional powers Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq as well as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Nabil Elaraby, the secretary-general of the Arab League.

Annan is seeking backing for a proposal that does not explicitly state that Assad must step down, but does call for a unity government which would exclude figures who jeopardize stability.

Diplomats have said that Russia proposed changes on Thursday to Annan's plan for a national unity government, despite initially supporting it, but the United States, Britain and France rejected the amendments.

Annan, who brokered a much abused ceasefire in April, said early on Friday he was "optimistic" that the Geneva talks would produce an acceptable outcome. Later, senior officials holding preparatory talks there failed to overcome differences. Western diplomats said Russia was pressing for changes to Annan's text.

Russian diplomats said the work continued but they would not "impose" a solution on Syria.

Moscow has vetoed Security Council resolutions condemning the Syrian government over its crackdown on protests which began 15 months ago and have turned into something close to civil war with a sectarian tinge. The U.N. estimates at least 10,000 people have been killed.

Russia, and China, both conscious of the risk of internal revolt at home, have objected to what they see as Western interference in the domestic affairs of rulers like Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

Western governments, however, have shown little will to repeat last year's Libyan experience of military support for Arab rebels in Syria, where Assad's forces are formidable and the complexities of religion and ethnicity much greater.

The world has been accused by Syrian opposition activists of inertia over the bloodshed.

Assad on Thursday dismissed the notion of any outside solution to the crisis which has imperiled his family's four decades in power: "We will not accept any non-Syrian, non-national model, whether it comes from big countries or friendly countries.

"No one knows how to solve Syria's problems as well as we do."

TANKS, HELICOPTERS

On the ground in Syria, fighting continued on Friday, with particular tension around the northern border with Turkey, a week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane.

Syrian helicopter gunships bombarded a strategic town in the north and tanks moved close to the commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels said. But Syrian troops kept well clear of new Turkish air defenses installed to curb Syrian action near its borders.

Regional analysts said that while neither Turkey nor its NATO allies appeared to have any appetite to enforce a formal no-fly zone over Syrian territory, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had made clear Assad would be risking what he called the "wrath" of Turkey if its aircraft strayed close to its borders.

Erdogan told a rally in the eastern city of Erzurum on Friday, broadcast by Turkish television: "We will not hesitate to teach a lesson to those who aim heavy weapons at their own people and at neighboring countries."

Turkey, sheltering some 34,000 Syrian refugees and providing bases for the rebel Free Syria Army, is in the forefront of the efforts to bring down Assad.

Could the Large Hadron Collider Discover the Particle Underlying Both Mass and Cosmic Inflation?

News | More Science

If the LHC discovers the Higgs boson or other theoretical particles, their existence could help explain inflation, one of the universe's great mysteries

LHC, large hadron collider, higgs boson Image: CERN

We?ve long understood black holes to be the points at which the universe as we know it comes to an end. Often billions of times more massive than the Sun, they...

Within a sliver of a second after it was born, our universe expanded staggeringly in size, by a factor of at least 10^26. That's what most cosmologists maintain, although it remains a mystery as to what might have begun and ended this wild expansion. Now scientists are increasingly wondering if the most powerful particle collider in history, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe, could shed light on this mysterious growth, called inflation, by catching a glimpse of the particle behind it. It could be that the main target of the collider's current experiments, the Higgs boson, which is thought to endow all matter with mass, could also be this inflationary agent.

During inflation, spacetime is thought to have swelled in volume at an accelerating rate, from about a quadrillionth the size of an atom to the size of a dime. This rapid expansion would help explain why the cosmos today is as extraordinarily uniform as it is, with only very tiny variations in the distribution of matter and energy. The expansion would also help explain why the universe on a large scale appears geometrically flat, meaning that the fabric of space is not curved in a way that bends the paths of light beams and objects traveling within it.

The particle or field behind inflation, referred to as the "inflaton," is thought to possess a very unusual property: it generates a repulsive gravitational field. To cause space to inflate as profoundly and temporarily as it did, the field's energy throughout space must have varied in strength over time, from very high to very low, with inflation ending once the energy sunk low enough, according to theoretical physicists.

Much remains unknown about inflation, and some prominent critics of the idea wonder if it happened at all. Scientists have looked at the cosmic microwave background radiation?the afterglow of the big bang?to rule out some inflationary scenarios. "But it cannot tell us much about the nature of the inflaton itself," says particle cosmologist Anupam Mazumdar at Lancaster University in England, such as its mass or the specific ways it might interact with other particles.

A number of research teams have suggested competing ideas about how the LHC might discover the inflaton. Skeptics think it highly unlikely that any earthly particle collider could shed light on inflation, because the uppermost energy densities one could imagine with inflation would be about 10^50 times above the LHC's capabilities. However, because inflation varied with strength over time, scientists have argued the LHC may have at least enough energy to re-create inflation's final stages.

It could be that the principal particle ongoing collider runs aim to detect, the Higgs boson, could also underlie inflation.

"The idea of the Higgs driving inflation can only take place if the Higgs's mass lies within a particular interval, the kind which the LHC can see," says theoretical physicist Mikhail Shaposhnikov at the ?cole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne in Switzerland. Indeed, evidence of the Higgs boson was reported at the LHC in December at a mass of about 125 billion electron volts, roughly the mass of 125 hydrogen atoms.

Also intriguing: the Higgs as well as the inflaton are thought to have varied with strength over time. In fact, the inventor of inflation theory, cosmologist Alan Guth at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, originally assumed inflation was driven by the Higgs field of a conjectured grand unified theory.

Georgia Democrats urge GOP to implement health care law

By RAY HENRY
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - Democratic leaders say Georgia's Republican governor should fully implement President Barack Obama's health care overhaul now that the U.S. Supreme Court says its key parts are legal.

Democratic state Sen. Vincent Fort said Thursday that Republicans leaders need to be "responsible."

He cited as precedent that former Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue accepted federal stimulus money from the Obama administration despite having political misgivings.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal refused to immediately comment on the ruling, though he plans to speak about the decision Thursday afternoon.

Outside the Statehouse, tea party activists tried to digest the complex ruling. Some say they hope Deal will try to block its implementation in Georgia, while others say Deal will have to uphold the law, even if he opposes it.

Egypt's president-elect to rally Tahrir protesters

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of Islamists flowed into Cairo's Tahrir Square to hear Egypt's president-elect make his first public speech since declaring victory in a clear bid to rally popular support as he faces a struggle for power with the country's ruling generals.

Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood is the first Islamist and the first civilian to win the presidency, a job held for nearly three decades by Hosni Mubarak who was ousted by an uprising last year.

But he is already facing a serious challenge after the Mubarak-era military rulers who oversee the transition took a series of decisions undermining the powers of his office before his swearing-in, which was scheduled for Saturday.

His visit to Tahrir is also a nod to the protesters who supported his bid for leadership in a bitter campaign that pitted him against Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.

Many protesters have called for Morsi to take the oath of office in the square, the epicenter of mass protests against Mubarak and later the continued military rule, but the ceremony was scheduled to be held Saturday before a high court.

His appearance in Tahrir a day before the official ceremony is clearly a nod to the calls for a popular oath.

Egyptians will be watching Morsi's statements to see whether he will accept the restrictions on his power or try to use his position as an elected president to force the military to lift them. His influence is hampered by a court decision that dissolved the country's first freely elected parliament, which was dominated by Islamists.

The ruling generals have promised to transfer power to an elected president by Sunday. But they also have given themselves sweeping powers that undercut the authority of the president. The constitutional declaration ? issued days before the winner of a runoff vote was announced ? also designated the generals the country's legislature in place of the disbanded parliament.

Protesters ? mainly Islamists but also including some of the liberal and secular activists who spearheaded the revolution against Mubarak ? took to the streets to demand that the generals rescind the declaration and reinstate the parliament.

Morsi's spokesman, Yasser Ali, said the president-elect wants to stand with the thousands who have camped in the square for over a week to express concern about the power grabs.

"He wants to confirm that people are the source of his power," Ali said. "He wants to show unity with his people over issues of the transition, which is now ending."

The generals say the moves were designed to fill a power vacuum and ensure that the president doesn't monopolize decision-making until a new constitution is drafted.

They have already said the current head of the ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi will be the new defense minister.

Many protesters already have complained that Morsi's agreement to be sworn in before a high court was a concession to the military. Traditionally, such ceremonies are held before parliament, which currently doesn't exist.

"We demand from the president of the republic that he calls off the constitutional declaration, reinstate the parliament as it was, and to stand here among us to be sworn in and swear he has all his powers," said a preacher in the square who addressed the crowd before Morsi arrived.

"From now on, we make our demands to the president of the republic, not the military council. The military council no longer rules Egypt."

Protesters in the square chanted, "The military council should leave tonight," and, "The president takes the oath in the square." Similar protests also were held in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria, and other cities.

A podium was set up in Tahrir for Morsi's speech, and the area was secured by the Republican guards. It was in the first time in the past 16 months that security forces have returned to protecting the square while rallies are held.

Ali said Morsi's agreement to take oath before the court does not mean the battle to regain his powers is over.

"This is an affirmation that (Morsi) respects the law and constitution," he said. "It doesn't mean approval of the declaration."

Speaking to newspapers editors Thursday, Morsi said discussions continued over how to on how to implement the law dissolving the parliament. The court decision declared a third of the elected seats unconstitutional and Brotherhood lawyers argue it is still possible to only dissolve that third.

"We should be patient with one another, two, three or four years, and try to live together in this atmosphere of freedom and democracy after the revolution," he said, according to comments published in the state-run Al-Ahram daily. "This is definitely a better atmosphere than before. But there are big challenges."

Morsi, the first elected Islamist leader of an Arab country, is also trying to reach out to many of the liberal and secular forces that were behind the uprising. They, along with Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, fear Morsi would work to establish a religious state. Most of those groups are not participating in the protests, although one prominent youth group the April 6 movement has joined the rally on Tahrir Square.

Morsi is consulting to form a unity government, which he promised won't be led by a Brotherhood member.

In the two-hour meeting with the editors, Morsi also dismissed worries that he would work to "Islamize" Egypt according to the Brotherhood vision. He said it was not possible.

"It is impossible to shake the pillars of the state in any direction. I am a president for all Egyptians," he said.

Before heading to Tahrir Square on Saturday, Morsi prayed in Al-Azhar mosque, a symbolic acknowledgement of respect to Sunni world's most prestigious learning institution.

Maybe dinosaurs were warm-blooded

Dinosaurs may not have been the slow, sunbathing reptiles researchers used to think. In fact, they may have been warm-blooded, new research suggests.

The researchers studied the "growth lines" on animal bones, which are similar to the growth rings in tree trunks. During slow-growing times like during the winter, they are darker and narrower, while in fast-growing times the bones have lighter, wider bands.

Figuring out if dinosaurs were warm-blooded endotherms (made their own body heat) or were "cold-blooded" ectotherms that relied on outside sources of warmth could illuminate a lot about how they lived, grew and evolved. How warm an animal is has an impact on their metabolism, and therefore how quickly they can grow and have babies.

Of bones and blood
Previously, scientists had thought that growth lines showed up only on the bones of cold-blooded animals, since these animals grow in fits and starts. Warm-blooded animals, like mammals and birds, are assumed to grow continuously, because they keep their temperatures up and have high metabolic rates, continually making energy to grow.

As such, researchers took the growth lines on dinosaur bones as evidence of their cold-bloodedness. Until now.

In this study, the researchers compared the bone lines from the leg bones of more than 100 wild ruminants (warm-blooded mammals like sheep and cows that have multiple stomachs) with seasonal rainfall and temperature cycles and with the animal's core body temperature and resting metabolic rate. The researchers showed that these warm-blooded animals also have bone growth lines indicating fast, yet interrupted yearly growth that depended on how long the "unfavorable" season lasted. [ Image Gallery: Dinosaur Fossils ]

Hot dinos
The growth lines they found on the ruminants were similar to those seen in previous studies of dinosaur bones ? indicating that both ruminants and dinosaurs have periods of high growth punctuated by "unfavorable" seasons with limited resources and little growth. This means that dinosaurs were likely warm-blooded like the ruminants.

"The argument we are giving in our paper, rather in favor of endothermy in dinosaurs, is that between the growth and rest lines, there's always a big region of highly vascularized (infiltrated with blood vessels) tissue that indicates very high growth rates," study researcher Meike Kohler of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain told LiveScience. "This is typical in dinosaurs and very different from reptiles, which have slow growth between the rest lines."

Sauropods were the only dinosaurs where researchers haven't seen growth lines similar to those of ruminants. Previous studies of their teeth indicate they would have had high body temperatures as well, though they might have been big enough for their mass to generate that heat ? what researchers call a "gigantotherm." Researchers don't know what their growth lines would have looked like, since no animals alive today are gigantotherms.

Fast growth?
This indicates that "dinosaurs also had very fast growth rates and needed to eat a lot and maintain high generation of heat internally," Kohler said, so they were most likely warm-blooded.

The theory that dinosaurs were warm has been gaining traction in the last few years in multiple fields, but the researchers admit that other, non-bone-based arguments for cold-bloodedness still stand. Endotherms should have the physical ability to move quickly, and lung volume to pump oxygen to muscles needed for running, which researchers can't be sure dinosaurs had.

"There are a lot of arguments in favor and against endothermy in dinosaurs," Kohler said. "It could be that they have some traits that are clearly endothermic," but others may be muddled.

The study was published Thursday in the journal Nature.

(AP) ? Thriller, a tiger that belonged to Michael Jackson when the entertainer lived at his Neverland ranch, has died of lung cancer at actress-activist Tippi Hedren's wildlife preserve in California.

The 13-year-old, 375-pound tiger died June 11, Hedren said Wednesday. A necropsy was performed and the tiger was cremated. Staff workers will hold a private service when the ashes are buried in a section of the preserve set aside for animals that die there.

Thriller and her brother Sabu were born on Nov. 20, 1998, and lived with Jackson until May 4, 2006, Hedren said.

When Jackson left Neverland for good, his veterinarian asked Hedren to take the cats at her Shambala Preserve in Acton, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles.

Other Neverland animals, including giraffes, flamingos, orangutans, elephants and dozens of reptiles, were sent to other sanctuaries in other parts of the country.

Shambala didn't have a lot of room, but Hedren built a $79,000 habitat next to the preserve's lake and there were trees and a hill and Thriller had a great life with Sabu, she said.

"Thriller was a real piece of work, one gutsy girl. She ruled Sabu's life. It was humorous to watch the whole relationship. She did things to him that male tigers would normally never allow. She would steal food from him. That's unheard of. She ruled the roost, was very independent and tough," Hedren said.

Unlike many of the animals at the preserve, Thriller and Sabu arrived at the compound in excellent health physically and emotionally, Hedren said.

There are 15 tigers at the compound, but Sabu is now alone in the habitat he shared with Thriller and he'll probably stay that way, Hedren said.

Tigers are loners in the wild, she explained.

Because Thriller was a famous tiger, she was very popular with visitors and media, Hedren said. "She didn't care. She was not a diva and didn't mug for the camera. We all loved her for it."

Staff was trying to cope with Thriller's death, Hedren said. "It's very hard for all of us when these animals go away. Fortunately for Sabu and Thriller, they came in healthy and content. They had no problem with being in quarantine for 30 days. They adjusted so well."

Most of the animals at Shambala, which requires $75,000 in donations every month to stay open, have trouble adjusting because they have such abusive pasts, Hedren said.

Jackson, who died in 2009, often talked about his love of animals, but he never called to check on the tigers and he never sent any money to help pay for their care, Hedren said.

A year after the tigers arrived, Hedren said staff sent a package of photos of Sabu and Thriller and T-shirts and other memorabilia to Jackson's children, "but we never heard a word back. I just think it's odd."

A call to a spokesman for Jackson's estate was not immediately returned. The estate did not exist when the animals were transferred.

Fresh Water Tips For Keeping Your Discus Fish Healthy ? Pets

Discus breeding is among the preferred fish that people like to see in their aquariums. They are bring in colour and quite adaptive to folk and are always aware of things around them. They follow you around and you don?t have ask for anything more than clean and safe water. By learning on how to keep a cleaner water for your fresh water Discus you can give it a long life. They require just a little advanced care but do have unique environment. Below are some tips, which you have to keep in mind always:

Check the pH level

Tarnished water does as much damage as good for the fish. The natural habitat of Discus fish contains warm and acidic temperature. Therefore , before you put the fish in water check the pH balance of the water available in your neighborhood. It should be between 5 to 6.5. The correct way to test the water is after it's been standing for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours. You need to use a pH meter for this.

Avoid using treated water but try and duplicate the natural environment as closely as practicable.

Change the water continually

To keep the water fresh you have to change is continually. It is recommended that you change 15 to 20% of tank water every day. This is crucial in order to remove harmful toxins and waste from the water which can change the pH balance.

Timing

Discus fish like to follow a routine and aren't exceedingly comfortable with changes. So feeding and water change time has to fixed. The good time to modify the water is after the feeding time. This way you can get rid of waste and left over food. Also maintain a routine helps them adjust with the environment better.

Keep the tank clean

A clean tank will aid you in keeping the water clean. Keep the tank free from dangerous decorations which can harm the fish. Also gravel is an ideal hiding place for waste and harmful objects, so keep your aquarium free of gravel. Keep a watch on deposits and algae round the tank and keep it clean.

Water temperature

A touch warm temperature will keep Discus fish ecstatic. You can install a fluorescent light within the fish tank to maintain the water temperature to roughly 82 to 86 degrees. Employ a thermometer to test the water temperature frequently. When you change the water make sure that there is no great temperature variation.

It is important to keep clean and fresh water, or the fish can fall sick and even die.

Harry Koots is a professional Aquarius and he has been teaching people on how discus breeding is done succesfully.

Since it isn't a very simple fish to keep, and breeding them in aquariums is even tougher. Harry will teach you the way to keep this fresh water discus in an aquarium that is massive enough for them, giving them high quality food etcetera.

Genetic heart diseases may be responsible for unexplained stillbirths

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Genetic researchers have made an important step towards resolving the mystery of the causes of intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD), or stillbirth, where a baby dies in the womb after the 14th week of gestation. IUFD is responsible for 60% of perinatal mortality and occurs in about one in every two hundred pregnancies in Europe. Up to half of these stillbirths are unexplained. Now scientists from Italy, Germany, and the US have found that up to 8% [1] of these unexplained deaths may be caused by specific genetic heart conditions.

Ms Alice Ghidoni, a PhD student at the University of Pavia, Italy, will tell the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics June 26 that the group's research shows for the first time that cardiac channelopathies, hereditary diseases in which the heartbeat rhythm is disturbed, were likely to have played a causative role in some IUFD deaths . "Since we knew that 10-15% of sudden infant death syndrome cases carry genetic variants associated with long QT syndrome or Brugada syndrome[2], we decided to investigate whether sudden death due to malignant arrhythmias could underlie some cases of IUFD as well," she will explain.

The researchers carried out molecular screening of stillborn fetuses where the cause of death remained unexplained after extensive post-mortem investigation. Informed consent was obtained from the parents. They looked for mutations of three genes, two of them involved in long QT and one in both long QT and Brugada syndromes, and found three disease-causing variants that were present in the IUFD cases, but absent in more than 1000 ethnically-matched controls.

Genetic testing is still quite rare in IUFD, but it is an important tool for uncovering the causes of unexplained death, says Ms Ghidoni. "The most common causes of fetal death are chromosomal abnormalities, infections, fetal-maternal haemorrhages, and maternal diseases," she says. "Most of these are relatively easy to identify. Since genetic screening is a long, expensive and complicated procedure, currently it is not routinely performed in cases where an autopsy has not shown the cause of death. However, such molecular investigation could be very useful to identify specific genetic defects occurring in the family, so that future pregnancies can be monitored with close clinical follow-up. In some cases, life-saving treatment could be given."

Identification of a fetus with a gene mutation for a cardiac channelopathy allows for treatment for the mother with drugs such as beta-blockers, the same treatment that is given to adults who have been identified with long QT syndrome.

Because the research was carried out by scientists from a number of different centres and countries, it was not possible to systematically collect parental DNA. However, as part of the planned expansion of the investigation, the researchers now intend to enlarge the study population further and to collect DNA from all family members. Cardiac channelopathies run in families, so genetic testing will be able to identify not just those parents who are at risk of an affected pregnancy, but also all family members who may be unaware that they have a potentially fatal heart condition.

"We have also identified new candidate genes which may be linked to cardiac channelopathies, and we will investigate them in our follow-up work," says Ms Ghidoni. "Our current work shows that nearly 3% of IUFDs may be caused by a genetic variant with a cardiac disease-causing role, and another 5% by a variant that may predispose to disease. We believe that the new candidate genes may enlarge this field yet further. This is vitally important because we can then depict a clear picture of arrhythmic risk in perinatal life, both before and after birth.

"We believe that it is very important to increase knowledge of these genetic disorders among paediatric cardiologists and gynaecologists and that genetic testing should be included in post-mortem analysis. Many more lives can be saved if there is sufficient awareness of these devastating conditions among healthcare professionals, as well as among the affected families who in many cases have already suffered enough," Ms Ghidoni will conclude.

(1) These figures differ from those in the abstract as they have been updated since it was submitted

[2]Long QT and Brugada syndromes are conditions whereby an irregular heartbeat leads to syncopes, cardiac arrest and sudden death due to mutations in cardiac ionic channels able to induce arrhythmias. They are best known for causing sudden unexplained death in young adults. While these syndromes can be identified through complete and accurate clinical evaluation and genetic testing, in most cases it is not until a sudden death has occurred that their existence is suspected.

Air Force Reserve wants an app for basic training

8 hrs.

Military recruits have marched off to boot camp with nothing more than their families' well-wishes in the past, but today's warriors could get a little help from their smartphones. The U.S. Air Force Reserve has drawn up a wish list for a smartphone app that can help recruits adjust to basic training and military life.

The dream app combines nutrition and exercise features that even civilian smartphone owners might envy. One app feature would count calories based on photos of food taken by the phone. Another would map a recruit's runs based on their smartphone GPS. A third feature would even provide a digital assistant similar to the Apple iPhone's Siri that can talk fitness encouragement to trainees.

But the app ideas list also has plenty of military-centric features based on learning military law, chain of command or individual responsibilities as an Air Force Reserve member. Even suggested games have themes, including "Name the Military Tune" or "Weapons Familiarization" for the U.S. military's standard-issue M-16 assault rifle ? not to mention games for learning rank, chain of command, military law, and Air Force history.

Such games would combine with possible social networking features that include basic profile information (including gender, base of assignment and ship date) and help bring people together for carpooling or to cooperate in fitness challenges. The Air Force Reserve envisions the app allowing up to 4,000 users at a time accessing the Internet through smartphone, netbook, tablet or computer.

The Air Force Reserve put out the call for interested smartphone app-makers in a "request for information" notice on June 13 with an original deadline of June 26 for any interested app-makers. But it has already extended the contact due date to July 6 because of "significant interest and questions."

Boosting blood system protein complex protects against radiation toxicity

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? New research in Nature Medicine shows that boosting a protein pathway in the body's blood making system protects mice from otherwise fatal radiation poisoning.

Scientists in the multi-institutional study -- posted online by the journal on June 24 -- say their findings open the potential for new treatments against radiation toxicity during cancer treatment or environmental exposures -- such as in a nuclear explosion or accident.

By identifying a target-specific intervention to protect the hematopoietic system against radiation toxicity, the study addresses a largely unmet challenge, according to the researchers.

"These findings suggest that pharmacologic augmentation of the activity of the Thbd-aPC pathway by recombinant Thbd (thrombomodulin) or aPC (activated protein C) might offer a rational approach to the mitigation of tissue injury and lethality caused by ionizing radiation," the scientists write in their manuscript. "Recombinant human aPC has undergone extensive clinical testing in patients, and recombinant soluble human Thbd is currently being investigated for efficacy in antithrombotic therapy in humans. Our data encourage the further evaluation of these proteins for their radio-mitigating activities."

The study reveals a previously unknown function of the Thbd-aPC pathway in radiation mitigation. The pathway is normally known for its ability to prevent the formation of blood clots and help the body fight infections. The researchers found the pathway helps blood cells in the bone marrow recover from injury caused by radiation exposure. They demonstrated that pharmacologic boosting of this pathway with two drugs tested for the treatment of thrombosis or infection (recombinant Thbd and aPC respectively) can be used in mice to prevent death caused by exposure to lethal doses of radiation.

In all instances of treatment with recombinant soluble Thbd or aPC, the result was accelerated recovery of hematopoietic progenitor cell activity in bone marrow and a reduction in the harmful effects of lethal total body irradiation. When treatment was with aPC, these benefits occurred even when treatment was delayed for 24 hours.

The scientists caution their study involves early laboratory research in mice, so it remains to be tested how the findings may translate to human treatment. Researchers also need to determine exactly why the protective function of the targeted Thbd-aPC protein pathway seems to work so well in mice.

Researchers noted that the protective benefits of Thbd-aPC occurred only in vivo in irradiated mouse models. The researchers reported that overexpressed Thbd in irradiated laboratory cell cultures did not offer the same protective benefits, as the cells did not survive. This indicates the protective benefits of Thbd on blood making cells in irradiated mouse models depends on the help of additional cells or molecules in the body, which the researchers are trying to identify in a follow-up study.

The study involves extensive multi-scientist collaborations that combined previously independent lines of research by groups at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Ulm, Germany (led by Hartmut Geiger, PhD, Division of Experimental Hematology/Cancer Biology and the Department of Dermatology/Allergic Diseases); the University of Arkansas, Little Rock (led by Martin Hauer-Jensen, MD, PhD, Division of Radiation Health, the College of Pharmacy and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System); the Blood Research Institute in Milwaukee, Wis. (led by Hartmut Weiler, PhD); and The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. (led by John H. Griffin, PhD, Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine).

The research team said the current study exemplifies a global shift to multi-investigator projects that allow a combination of varied expertise by scientists tackling complex problems from the perspective of their respective fields. This approach requires the willingness of investigators to share unpublished data and engage in an open collaboration. The researchers also said the study underscores the importance of continued federal funding for leading edge basic research that can benefit human health.
