(Reuters) ? BlackBerry maker Research In Motion brushed off suggestions on Thursday that it would discontinue production of its PlayBook computer tablet as "pure fiction" after an analyst said the company may be considering an exit from the market.
"Rumors suggesting that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued are pure fiction," RIM spokeswoman Marisa Conway said in an emailed statement. "RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market and the future of QNX in its platform."
QNX is the operating system used in the PlayBook. RIM has said it will launch "superphones" next year using the QNX software to replace its aging existing phone software.
A Collins Stewart analyst said on Thursday that RIM may have halted PlayBook production and canceled additional tablet projects.
"We believe RIM has stopped production of its PlayBook and is actively considering exiting the tablet market," Collins Stewart semiconductor analyst John Vihn wrote in a note.
He cited last week's news that contract manufacturer Quanta Computer had laid off a significant number of workers at a factory focused on producing the PlayBook.
"Additionally, our due diligence indicates that RIM has canceled development of additional tablet projects," Vihn wrote.
The PlayBook has failed to make much headway in a tablet market dominated by Apple's iPad. Amazon.com launched a content-rich and cheaper tablet called the Kindle Fire on Wednesday.
RIM said it shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in the last six weeks of its fiscal first quarter and another 200,000 in its full second quarter.
A number of retailers selling the PlayBook have cut prices recently in what analysts see as a bid to push out rising inventory.
Hewlett-Packard abandoned its TouchPad last month after just seven weeks on shelves.
RIM shares were down 2.6 percent at $21.32 on the Nasdaq early on Thursday afternoon and are down more than 60 percent so far this year.

After a tumultuous season of "Teen Mom?," the mamas packed up their dramas -- and their caterpillar eyelashes -- and headed to L.A. for their obligatory therapy session with Dr. Drew Pinsky.
On Tuesday night's episode -- the first of the two-part "Finale Special" -- ?fan favorite Farrah (she's got to be somebody's favorite, right?) received most of the good doctor's attention. And his Kleenex. But that's not all he was handing out....

Acting like a mopey teenager (or "Real Housewives" charmer Ashley Holmes), Farrah cried on about her cruel fate -- i.e., missing out on her teenage years because she had a baby. And although Farrah had agreed to leave her daughter, Sophia, in the stable home of her besotted grandparents while she "found herself" in Florida, she used this opportunity -- before a live studio audience -- to tell her mom she'd changed her mind. Maybe. Fickle Farrah hasn't (or hadn't, when the show was taped four months ago) decided yet whether it was in her Sophia's best interest to be cared for by babysitters in Florida or her doting grandparents in Iowa.
Farrah also cried about her loneliness, surprising Dr. Drew and no one else. "You seem like somebody who would have lots of friends." Either he's a terrible judge of character or has never seen an episode of "Teen Mom."

No matter: We became insta-fans of D. Pins when he put an end to Farrah's pity party. Oh wait, that's what we said. Still, Dr. Drew was pretty stern: "You have to let go of the fantasies of childhood," he admonished. "It's time to let go."

I find this book to be very interesting and relevant to my studies here at Ohio Wesleyan. With the Environmental Studies major we discuss and view different perspectives of the state of the world, which can be very complicated. With the Economic major, we also view these subjects with the economic standpoint, and this book melts these two subjects together. It is also extremely related to my Environmental Economics class that I am currently taking. The more one knows and understands about different perspectives, the more difficult these decisions pertaining with the environment becomes; however these different perspectives make forming ones own opinion much easier.
I agree that each company/entity should be accountable for their actions, and the only way to make sure this happens is to privatize most of these public goods. For example the fishing industry should use some mechanism of privatization, like permits or private fishing zones for instance. Although I realize this has been done in a lot of areas, and places like international waters are hard/impossible to ?privatize?, doing so would make the fishing communities responsible for ?their? fish. If they were to over-fish one year, the repercussions would be felt the next. These permits would also have to last for several years, such as 30, to keep the fishermen liable for their actions. These permits could also be transferable, such as the cap and trade system for carbon emissions. These private organizations would also be able to come together and negotiate what is best for the ?privately common? good, further ensuring the upkeep of the natural goods ? Like the Maine lobstermen example given in the text. Plus there is no debate who would be able to work faster to fix problems and make important decisions ? government or private ? the answer is undoubtedly private.
The down-side of this system is the possible monopolization of this tactic, and also the ?common? aspect of these areas. Places like lakes and oceans are not technically owned by anyone and are often used for recreational fishing, boating, swimming etcetera. The privatization of this, such as private beach clubs and fishing permits, takes away these ?common? areas for people on vacation or the locals. One part of the book I did not agree with was the uneven distribution of pollution. One because the world really is not that large, what we do in America is felt around the world. Two, where do all of our old computers and televisions go to? ? third world countries. And finally, why should other countries even have to deal with our waste to begin with, they did not make the waste nor do our actions benefit them, so why should they feel the brunt of it. I think instead we, and the world, need to worry about what we do ourselves and how we can make little changes to benefit the earth and in time ourselves. Talk is cheap however ? everyone knows what we should do, I don?t see many people doing it.

GENEVA ? Cities in Iran, India, Pakistan and the capital of Mongolia rank among the worst on the planet for air pollution, while those in the U.S. and Canada are among the best, according to the first global survey by the World Health Organization.
The southwest Iranian city of Ahvaz walked away with the unfortunate distinction of having the highest measured level of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers.
WHO released the list Monday to highlight the need to reduce outdoor air pollution, which is estimated to cause 1.34 million premature deaths each year. The global body said investments to lower pollution levels quickly pay off due to lower disease rates and, therefore, lower healthcare costs.
The list, which relies on country-reported data over the past several years, measures the levels of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers ? so-called PM10s ? for almost 1,100 cities.
WHO recommends an upper limit of 20 micrograms for PM10s, which can cause serious respiratory problems in humans. They are mostly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide from power plants, auto exhausts and industry.
Ahvaz's annual average of PM10s was 372 micrograms per cubic meter. Heavy industry and low-quality vehicle fuel are the main causes of air pollution in this desert city of 1.3 million.
The study found that the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator had an annual average PM10s density of 279 micrograms per cubic meter, followed by another west Iranian city, Sanandaj, with 254 micrograms.
Cities in Pakistan and India, such as Quetta and Kanpur, as well as Botswana's capital Gaborone, also ranked high on the pollution scale.
Mohammad Hasan, 39, of Karachi, Pakistan, said attempts to improve air quality in the port city of 18 million ? such as by replacing heavily polluting buses with vehicles using compressed natural gas ? are being undermined by bigger polluters who are "playing havoc with the lives of Karachi populace."
"Industries and factories are emitting thick clouds of smoke, and no government agency is out there to check them or correct them," the bank employee said.
WHO said the reasons for high pollution levels varied, but that often rapid industrialization and the use of poor quality fuels for transportation and electricity generation are to blame.
In India, major metropolitan areas such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata have banned the construction of new power plants within city limits, and existing ones are being shut down or relocated.
But at the same time, a lack of public transport has led to an explosion of privately owned cars and SUVs as the economy booms, with the number of heavily polluting diesel vehicles increasing 10-fold as diesel is highly subsidized by the government.
In Ulan Bator, the air pollution is mainly related to the burning of coal, wood and everything else for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. Coal-fired power plants spew smoke over the city, which lies in a valley surrounded by mountains that trap and hold the pollution, much like Beijing.
Ulan Bator has also seen a huge influx of former herders and farmers who live in felt tents known as gers or wooden shacks with no heat and little electricity, relying on the burning of coal, wood and dried dung to keep warm and cook meals. Combined with vehicle emissions, that creates a heavy blanket of smog that smothers the city for most of the year and grows especially noxious in winter.
At the other end of the list are cities in Canada and the United States, which benefit from lower population density, favorable climates and stricter air pollution regulation.
Yukon territory's capital Whitehorse had a yearly average of just 3 micrograms of PM10s per cubic meter, while Santa Fe, New Mexico, measured 6 micrograms.
"It's absolutely wonderful," said Whitehorse Mayor Bev Buckway. "A lot of people come up north and they smell the air and the say "'Oh wow. Amazing. The air smells so good,'" she said. "And we tend to take it for granted because we just have that all the time."
Santa Fe Mayor David Coss said Monday that he's pleased but not surprised as the city consistently gets high rankings from the American Lung Association.
He said the clean air is one of the things he loves about living in Santa Fe.
Washington, D.C., had a level of 18 micrograms, Tokyo measured 23 micrograms, and Paris had 38 micrograms of PM10s per cubic meter.
WHO also released a shorter table comparing levels of even finer dust particles, known as PM2.5s. The level considered harmful there is 10 micrograms per cubic meter.
This list contained no measurements from Asia apart from Ulan Bator, which again ranked worst with 63.0 micrograms.

LOS ANGELES ? Ricki Lake celebrated her top-scoring 23 points and 12 inches of weight loss; Nancy Grace celebrated some quick thinking in the control room; and Chaz Bono celebrated just getting through his routine on "Dancing With the Stars."
"My knees just hurt so much," Bono said before landing in last place Monday night. The author and activist is counting on viewer votes to carry him through Tuesday's episode, when a second celebrity will be eliminated from the hit ABC show.
Judges' scores are combined with viewer votes to determine who is ousted each week. Basketball star Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace, was the first contestant to go.
Judges said Monday that Bono's quickstep was just too slow and gave him 17 points out of 30.
"The bottom line is it's a quickstep and I've moved faster through the car wash," judge Len Goodman said.
Grace was perhaps moving a little too fast. She suffered a wardrobe malfunction during a bouncy number danced to "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing"). Grace had a little too much swing in partner Tristan MacManus' arms and her breast spilled out of her dress.
Viewers saw little if nothing of the mishap, however, thanks to a quick cut-away to the studio audience. After the number, host Tom Bergeron consoled the flustered Grace.
"On the European version," he said with a laugh, "that would be perfectly fine."
The 42-year-old Bono blamed his aching knees for forcing him to "(take) out some of the flashier stuff that was just really hurting my body," but said he'll push himself to the limit to stay on the show.
Lake's flashy moves during the jive earned her and partner Derek Hough the highest score of the night, and she's as happy about that as she is about her shrinking body. Lake, who said last week that she was inspired by former contestant Kirstie Alley's "Dancing" weight loss, has dropped four inches from her hips, four from her waist and another four from the rest of her after three weeks of rehearsals.
"I'm really getting in great shape," she said after the show. "I'll be wearing less and less clothing. The smaller I get, the less will be covered."
Rob Kardashian revealed his own weight woes before collecting 21 points for what judges called a "confident" jive.
"It's official. Rob Kardashian is a better dancer than (sister) Kim Kardashian!" judge Carrie Ann Inaba said Monday. (Kim lasted just three weeks when she was part of the show's 2008 cast.)
"You have the dancing gene," Inaba said.
Kardashian's 21 points were good for third place, where he tied with Grace, singer Chynna Phillips and Italian actress (and Clooney ex) Elisabetta Canalis.
Actor J.R. Martinez and reality star Kristin Cavallari both finished second with 22 points.
Joining Bono near the bottom of the scoreboard were actor David Arquette and TV personality Carson Kressley, who each earned 18 points.
Arquette said before his performance that he wanted to "blow people's minds," but the judges slammed his routine.
"Any connection that had with the jive was a coincidence," Goodman said. "The technique wasn't there."
Kressley turned in hours of extra rehearsal time, but his quickstep was still "a little wobbly," Inaba said.
Soccer pro Hope Solo scored 19 points for a jive that earned a mixed response from the judges.
The new "Dancing" set, however, which made its debut last week, is winning unanimous raves from the cast of pros. The revamped ballroom features a three-tier balcony, cocktail-table seating and a grand staircase that splits to reveal the orchestra.
"It's so epic. It's an honor to dance on it," said Mark Ballas, Cavallari's professional partner. "It's got a cool energy. You step out into it. It feels like a Roman coliseum."

SUNDAY, Sept. 25 (HealthDay News) -- The bone drug Zometa, once considered a promising weapon to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence, should not be used routinely in treatment of the disease, researchers say.
In a new study of breast cancer patients, Zometa (zoledronic acid) did not increase disease-free survival overall, and it appeared to raise the risk of a serious side effect, said study co-author Dr. Robert Coleman, a professor of medical oncology at the University of Sheffield in England.
However, "for the one-third of women in the study who had gone fully through menopause at the time of study entry, there is significant benefit in terms of both disease recurrence and overall survival," Coleman added.
The results of the trial, published online Sept. 25 in the New England Journal of Medicine, were slated to be presented Sunday at the 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress in Stockholm. Coleman also presented findings from the study at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in late 2010.
Women receiving hormone therapy for breast cancer treatment are prone to weakening and thinning of the bone, a condition known as osteoporosis, so they often receive bone-building drugs known as bisphosphonates. Some previous research had suggested these bone drugs might also help to prevent recurrence of breast cancer.
Zometa, which is delivered intravenously, is also used to relieve pain when cancer spreads to the bone.
In the study, Coleman and his colleagues randomly assigned almost 3,400 patients with early-stage breast cancer to standard therapy or to standard therapy plus Zometa.
The research team looked at overall survival and disease recurrence for an average of nearly 5 years of follow-up. They found no significant differences between the groups. According to the study, 377 patients in the group receiving the bone drug either died or had a recurrence during the five-year study, compared to 375 in the standard therapy group.
Overall, survival rates were 85.4 percent in the bone-drug group and 83.1 percent in the standard therapy group. In each group, 77 percent had disease-free survival.
But among the Zometa users, they reported 17 cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw, a severe disease that can cause the death of jawbone tissue. Another nine women were thought to have the condition. No one in the control group developed it.
While the results suggest routine use of Zometa for women with breast cancer is not advised, the researchers said Zometa might still be of some benefit for breast cancer patients who are more than five years past menopause.
Among this group were 519 women on the bone drug and 522 on standard therapy alone. At the five-year follow up, 78.2 percent of the bone drug group were alive and free of invasive recurrence, compared to 71 percent of the standard therapy group.
"The study is probably telling us that the interaction of reproductive hormones and bone is very important in driving recurrence of breast cancer," Coleman said.
The study was funded by Novartis AG, which makes the drug, and the National Cancer Research Network. Coleman has reported speaker fees from Novartis.
Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, commented on the overall findings. "We had hoped that zoledronic acid would harden bone and reduce the rate of metastatic disease," he said. "We had also hoped this would increase survival. Neither occurred."
The increased risk of osteonecrosis is a concern, Brawley said. Even so, doctors must still pay attention to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in all cancer patients, he said.
