No Google Maps for Amazon's new Kindle Fire

Amazon's new Kindle Fire will have mapping services via a tie-up with Nokia Oyj, according to two people familiar with the situation, filling a gap in the tablet's capabilities while snubbing Google's popular service.

The world's largest Internet retailer, which says its nine-month old Kindle Fire now accounts for one in five U.S. tablet sales, has teamed up with Nokia on mapping, the two people told Reuters.

Amazon will release at least one new version of the Kindle Fire next Thursday.

Amazon will also add location capabilities to the new Kindle Fire, which requires either a GPS chip or a process known as Wi-Fi triangulation, the people said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak ahead of Thursday's launch event.

Mapping services, which are popular features on tablets, typically include street maps, information about local businesses and sometimes traffic status. They can also support navigation instructions and third-party applications that depend on location information, such as travel services.

Location capabilities mark the location of tablet and smartphone users.

Google's Nexus 7 tablet, which competes directly with the Kindle Fire, comes with GPS receiver chips to support location and mapping functions.

The first Kindle Fire launched last year and at $199 costs half the price of the entry-level Apple Inc iPad, helping it rapidly gain consum?er acceptance. On Thursday, Amazon said its Kindle Fires had completely sold out.

Analysts say the 7-inch device helps drive sales of digital media such as e-books and music, which in turn propels core retail growth for the company.

Amazon may unveil larger versions of the Fire on Thursday in Los Angeles, analysts and media say, which will compete more directly with the iPad.

Although the Kindle now runs on an early version of Google's Android, which Amazon developed into its own operating system, it does not integrate Google Maps into the device. That means users had to access Google Maps via a Web browser, or download map apps from third-party developers.

A Nokia spokesman declined to comment and an Amazon spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.

Cooperating with Nokia may help Amazon develop integrated, or "native," mapping functionality for the Kindle Fire without relying on Google Maps. Nokia is one of the world's largest mapping companies, through its 2007 acquisition of Navteq.

Apple took a similar step earlier this year, when it dropped Google Maps in favor of its own mapping features for its next mobile operating system, known as iOS 6. As part of the switch, Apple signed a global licensing deal with TomTom, another leading mapping company, for its map content and related information.

In July, Amazon agreed to buy mapping startup UpNext, which specializes in detailed 3-D maps of cities and some sporting stadiums.?

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State's season opener on Saturday will be the first since 1949 not featuring someone with the last name Paterno on the coaching staff. They're out of the picture, like the campus statue of the family patriarch; erased like his coaching records.

But the family will be in Beaver Stadium in spirit, if not watching from a skybox ? a sign that through the turmoil of the past few months, life goes on for the clan that was synonymous with Penn State for decades and remains firmly rooted in a supportive community.

Scandal tarnished the legacy of the late Joe Paterno, the Hall of Famer who coached the Nittany Lions until his firing in November days after former assistant Jerry Sandusky was arrested on child sex abuse charges. Son and former longtime assistant coach Jay Paterno no longer tutors the quarterbacks.

Jay Paterno, one of Joe and Sue Paterno's five children, has been traveling and writing columns at a time when he's usually used to getting ready for the season opener.

"It's such a change in your lifestyle. Credit to Jay. Jay has kept himself busy. He's smart enough, savvy enough," said Tim Sweeney, a businessman and former player who is head of the Football Letterman's Club. Sweeney, who said he can relate as a former high school coach himself, briefly saw Jay Paterno at a charity golf outing in early August.

"Still, their hearts will be at Beaver Stadium on Saturday," said Sweeney, referring to Jay Paterno and the other veteran assistants who left after the arrival of Bill O'Brien, Paterno's replacement as head coach.

The family, as part of Paterno's employment agreement, received use of a Beaver Stadium suite for 25 years. Family members intend to attend the season opener against Ohio University on Saturday, but only to show their support for the new regime, family spokesman Dan McGinn said.

"The family doesn't want to do anything to distract from the game this weekend," he said.

Affixed to the front screen door of the Paternos' modest ranch home is a copy of a blue and white sign also on display in the windows of most downtown businesses, some homes and even cars. The message on the sign reads: "Proud to Support Penn State Football."

Members of the Paterno family either did not return calls or would not comment for this article. But the community of State College, often known as Happy Valley, appears to remain protective of the closest thing it has to a royal family.

Neighbors said that while Sue Paterno might venture out a little less than before the scandal hit, grandchildren, other relatives and friends still stop by the house regularly. Well-wishers, strangers among them, drop off Penn State paraphernalia or other messages of support in the front yard or doorstep.

Most in the broader community who talked to The Associated Press said what happened was tragic and they're sympathetic to the sex-abuse victims, but they perceived a rush to judgment about Joe Paterno's role in the scandal.

Sue Paterno continues to volunteer with Special Olympics, a charity she has long championed. A new Catholic student center across the street from campus bearing her name appears near completion.

"We are so grateful to her and the entire Paterno family for their dedication, prayers, and support," the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown said in a statement. "Because of Mrs. Paterno and so many others, Catholic students at Penn State will soon have a place to call their very own."

Sue Paterno stayed mostly out of sight at a summer pep rally for the team, save for a brief appearance at a side door of Penn State's football building. Unseen by most of the dozens of fans at the early morning rally, she was there and gone ? quickly.

Lawyer and former Penn State defensive back Adam Taliaferro, now a university trustee, grew close to the Paternos after suffering a serious spinal cord injury in a game against Ohio State in 2000. He said he spoke to Sue inside the football building while fans rallied outside and told the AP she was "one of the strongest women I know."

"All of us together will help her get through it," Taliaferro said. "She will always remain a huge part of the university."

Paterno started with Penn State as an assistant coach in 1950, becoming head coach in 1966.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh's university-commissioned report in July said Paterno and three other school officials concealed allegations against Sandusky. Ten days later, the school took down the bronzed statue of Paterno outside Beaver Stadium.

Then, the NCAA announced it had accepted the findings and levied unprecedented penalties on the program including a four-year bowl ban, significant scholarship cuts and a $60 million fine. The NCAA vacated every Penn State win from 1998-2011, and Paterno was stripped of 111 career victories ? meaning he no longer holds the record for most coaching wins in major college football.

Paterno, who was diagnosed with lung cancer days after his firing, was not interviewed by Freeh's team, and the family said the NCAA had not contacted the family or the family's attorney. He died in January.

The family has said university leadership and the NCAA accepted Freeh's conclusions in a rush to judgment, without due process and a questioning of the findings. They vowed after Freeh released his findings that they would conduct their own investigation, which is ongoing, McGinn said.

"They're not looking for sympathy," McGinn said when asked how the Paternos have reacted to criticism. "The family is very stoic about this. The intent is just that the complete truth comes out."

LIBERTY, Texas (AP) ? One of more than a dozen men and boys accused in the repeated sexual assault of an 11-year-old Texas girl escaped from the courthouse during a break in his trial after the child tearfully testified and jurors watched a video showing one of the alleged assaults.

Eric McGowen, 20, is the first of 14 adults to face trial, accused of sexually assaulting the girl during three months in 2010. Six juveniles also are charged in the attacks in Cleveland, a small town about 45 miles northeast of Houston.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys huddled briefly with Judge Mark Morefield after McGowen failed to return to the courtroom in nearby Liberty following an afternoon break Wednesday.

Morefield said a bench warrant had been issued and that the trial would go on without McGowen. Bail was increased from $35,000 to $250,000.

Defense attorney Matthew Poston and prosecutors did not comment on McGowen's disappearance because of a gag order. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office had no update early Thursday on whether the suspect had been found.

McGowen is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The girl, testifying using a pseudonym, told jurors about two incidents, one in October 2010 and one the following month, in which she said McGowen and several other men and boys took turns sexually assaulting her while recording the encounters on video.

The girl briefly broke down in tears as jurors were shown a few minutes of video of an alleged October 2010 sexual assault in a house in Cleveland where she and the defendants lived.

The girl, who was 11 at the time, said she was brought into what she described as the "baby room," and that McGowen and others took turns sexually assaulting her. She said the video, which several jurors turned away from, was of her being assaulted by another man charged in the case.

"Did the guys just take turns with you?" prosecutor Joe Warren asked.

"Yes, sir," the girl said.

The girl seemed calm for most of the roughly 1? hours she testified. She mostly gave short answers, often pausing to stare at the floor or ceiling of the courtroom before responding.

She described another alleged sexual assault that November that started in a different Cleveland home and continued at a nearby abandoned trailer.

Asked by Warren if more than 20 males might have assaulted her that day, the girl responded, "Probably."

She also told jurors that McGowen assaulted her with a beer bottle during that incident.

Jurors were shown police photos of used condoms and condom wrappers found inside and outside the house after the alleged November incident.

Poston questioned the girl for about six minutes, asking whether she twice had told police early in the investigation that McGowen had never sexually assaulted her. The girl said she didn't remember saying that.

Prosecutors say the girl was assaulted on at least five occasions from mid-September through early December of 2010.

Eight of the 20 defendants accused in the case have pleaded guilty, including all six juveniles.

Authorities began investigating that December, after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he had seen a cellphone video of her being attacked in an abandoned trailer.

Three people who have pleaded guilty ? two adults and a juvenile who has since turned 18 ? also testified Wednesday.

Isaiah Ross, 22, told jurors he saw McGowen sexually assault the girl with a beer bottle. The other adult, Marcus Porchia, 28, and the teen testified they saw others assault the girl but not McGowen.

Ross and Porchia each received 15-year prison terms. The six juveniles who pleaded guilty each received suspended seven-year prison terms.

The case sparked outrage in the roughly 9,000-strong community of Cleveland. Early in the investigation, some residents suggested the girl was partly responsible because they say she wore makeup, looked older than her age and wasn't properly supervised by her parents, drawing widespread condemnation.

The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.

Warren later showed jurors a video and read a written confession in which McGowen admitted to receiving oral sex from the girl.

"What took place to this girl was nothing better than a pack of animals attacking," Warren said.

On Tuesday, Poston tried but failed to get the confessions thrown out, arguing that police had improperly questioned McGowen.

During his opening statement, Poston told jurors that the video evidence in the case doesn't show McGowen sexually assaulting the girl.

"The truth in this case is not always what it seems," he said.

Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Bizarre poodle moth sparks a mystery

Zoologist Arthur Anker's picture of a Venezuela poodle moth has captured the curiosity of Internet onlookers.

It's been compared to a fluffy dog, a Pokemon character and a Power Rangers villain ? but whatever it is, the Venezuelan poodle moth has captured the Internet like Mothra in a bad Japanese movie. Now it's up to the experts to figure out exactly where this moth belongs on the tree of life.

The first thing to emphasize is that the poodle moth is no phony concoction like the jackalope, dogerpillar or?chupacabra. Its cute, furry, scary look is totally in line with what's expected for a neotropical ornamental moth. In fact, cryptozoologist Karl Shuker found a similar picture of a white, fuzzy critter known as Diaphora mendica, or muslin moth, a member of the lepidopteran family Arctiidae.

The Venezuelan poodle moth is even more bizarre-looking than your run-of-the-mill muslin moth. That's largely due to the details that zoologist Arthur Anker of Brazil's Federal University of Ceara captured in the photograph he took?in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela's Canaima National Park several years ago.

The nearly head-on perspective, without any sense of size scale, led my colleague Rosa Golijan to compare the bug to a Power Rangers villain?? for example, Finster, the loyal servant of Rita Repulsa.?However, if this showy critter is indeed a neotropical relative of the muslin moth, it's much more benign: Such moths feed on herbaceous plants and cause little trouble. They're also relatively small: The muslin moth's wingspan amounts to little more than an inch (28 to 38 millimeters, according to the UKmoths website).

Shuker would love to nail down the flying poodle's precise species name: "Is it indeed a member of Arctiidae, or are its taxonomic affinities elsewhere? Could it even be a species still undescribed by science? Thousands of new insects are discovered every year in the South American rain forests, so it would be by no means unusual if Art's Venezuelan poodle moth proved to be one, too," he wrote on the ShukerNature blog.

The fact that there are so many types of moths in the Arctiidae family ? an estimated 11,000 species around the world, including 6,000 known species in the neotropical region?? would make it tricky to classify this particular insect, unless there's an actual specimen in hand that can be sampled for genetic analysis. Nevertheless, we've put out our own inquiries with lepidopterists, and if we hear anything back on the bizarre case of the Venezuelan poodle moth, we'll let you know in an update.

Six people were killed and at least a dozen wounded in shootings that started Friday afternoon in Chicago and continued Saturday, police say.

The Chicago Tribune reported?that on Saturday afternoon two masked assailants?opened fire in the Chatham neighborhood on the city?s south side.

A 20-year-old man died at the scene and an 18-year-old man shot in the leg and lower arm died later at a hospital, officials said. A teen girl wounded in the shooting was in serious condition, they said.

The gunman ran off and got into a car after the shooting, police said.

About 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, a man later identified as Stephin Wilkins was fatally wounded during a robbery in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood. Wilkins, who is in his 20s, was sitting in a vehicle with his girlfriend when two men with a handgun tried to rob them, police said. Wilkins was shot trying to fight the robbers, police said.

Late Friday night, also in the Chatham neighborhood, Phillip McCall, 34, was shot twice in the back and died later at a hospital, officials said.

Late Friday afternoon, The Associated Press reported, 17-year-old Lucian Dreux was fatally shot and a 42-year-old woman nearby was wounded in the thigh by a mountain bike rider in the city?s South Side Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said. Motives were unclear and witnesses were not cooperating.

Also late Friday afternoon, 30-year-old Noah Cruz was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, the AP said.

Early Saturday morning a man was shot on a South Side street by a passenger in a passing SUV; a woman and two men outside a North Side engagement party were wounded in a drive-by shooting; a man was wounded in a North Side alley; and a man in the West Side was shot by one for four assailants, all of whom fled on foot afterward.

Other shootings Friday included a South side drive-by that left a man with a head wound, an attack by a gunman that injured two 19-year-old men; and a South Side shooting that left a man and woman, both in their 30s, injured. Powerful typhoon lumbers toward Japan's Okinawa

TOKYO (AP) ? A powerful typhoon packing winds up to 215 kilometers (134 miles) per hour was lumbering toward Okinawa on Saturday and was projected to be the strongest typhoon to hit the southern Japanese island in several years.

Typhoon Bolaven, the 15th typhoon of the season, was expected to reach Okinawa on Sunday, island weather officials said.

It comes on the heels of Typhoon Tembin, which on Friday crossed over southern Taiwan and caused flooding in some areas, but largely spared the island's heavily populated areas. Floodwaters from Tembin reached 3 meters (9 feet) high in one town, where armored vehicles rescued several dozen people from their flooded homes. It returned to sea by late Friday morning.

Typhoon Bolaven was approaching Minami-Daito Island, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) southeast of Okinawa, on Saturday and moving north-northwest at 15 kph (9 mph). Maximum winds near the eye were projected at 180 kph (112 mph). On Friday, the storm had winds of 162 kph (101 mph), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The weather Saturday morning in Naha, the capital of Okinawa prefecture, was still sunny with mild winds, officials said.

But the Japanese Meteorological Agency issued advisories for gale-force winds in Okinawa and high waves in the waters around the island, where more than half the 50,000 U.S. troops based in Japan are stationed.

One of the biggest bases, Kadena Air Base, banned water-based activities in the rough seas as part of its preparations for the typhoon.

Weather forecasters on public broadcaster NHK said the slow-moving storm could dump up to 80 centimeters (31.5 inches) of rain on Okinawa.

Bolaven had sustained winds of 162 kph (101 mph) and gusts of up to 215 kph (134 mph), the agency said.

Intelsat 21, a satellite that will provide television communication services, was put into orbit on Sunday August 19 by a Zenit-3SL rocket which blasted off from a floating platform in the Pacific Ocean provided by commercial satellite launcher Sea Launch.

The rocket lifted off from the Launch Platform Odyssey, a modified oil drilling platform positioned at the Equator in the Pacific Ocean.

The launch took place at 6.55 am Sunday August 19 (UTC/GMT).

The satellite reached geosynchronous transfer orbit within 30 minutes of launch and within 55 minutes initial data was received from the satellite.

Boeing Satellite Systems, which built the satellite for Intelsat, confirmed that it was functioning normally.

The satellite will be moved next into geostationary orbit where it will have a permanent position locked above a fixed point on the Earth.

The Intelsat 21 satellite has been built to operate for 18 or more years and replaces the Intelsat 9 communications satellite.

Intelsat 21, which will enter service later this year, will provide C-band services for North America, South America and Europe, and Ku-band services for North America, the Caribbean, Brazil, Europe and Western Africa. This is the second of four satellites built by Boeing for Intelsat.

Kjell Karlsen, president of Sea Launch AG, said of the launch: "We appreciate the trust and confidence that Intelsat has placed in the Sea Launch system and are thrilled to have successfully launched the Intelsat 21 satellite.

This is our third mission for Intelsat in the past 11 months, which demonstrates the commitment to schedule and mission assurance by Sea Launch."

If you were to ask me if my parents loved me, I would, like Tevye and Golda in Fiddler on the Roof, have to pause and think.?

In the family I grew up in, love was a term used rather exclusively as the valediction in friendly letters.? It was rarely said aloud. We also weren?t big on hugging or kissing.? It was awkward for me when I left home and entered a different culture, where people regularly hug and kiss at greetings and goodbyes whether or not they actually love one another. I still feel a bit awkward about it.

Praise?sometimes taken to be an expression of love?was likewise nearly absent in the family I grew up in.? The self-esteem movement, thank goodness, hadn?t yet begun; or, if it had, my parents didn?t know about it or didn?t approve of it.? They would have considered it unseemly to tell me or my siblings that we were wonderful, smart, or special, and even more unseemly to brag about us to others. In fact, I think my mother had an intuitive understanding of the value of humility and the dangers of pride.? She paid no attention to the grades we got in school, seeing them as irrelevant to anything important in life.? If I boasted about a grade, which I recall doing on one or two occasions, she would subtly put me in my place by asking me some question about the subject, a question that would make me realize how little I really understood. So, back to the question, did my parents love me? What is love? It?s a positively valenced term used for things that we feel attached to and fond of. We can love humanity, our country, our dog, money, a new set of clothes, our car, ourselves, our spouse, our children. I don?t know how attached my mother and stepfather felt to me.? I?m glad they weren?t so attached that they had difficulty letting me out of their sight.? They certainly cared for me and seemed to enjoy my company. So, yes, I suppose they loved me.

But what I felt most from my parents, for which I was and am most grateful, was respect. When I expressed an idea or asked a question they took it seriously. And as part of respect they trusted me. They seemed to believe that my siblings and I had good judgment and didn?t need much watching or advising, even when we were little children.? They never said that, they just showed it. ?And because they respected me, I found it easy to respect them. ?Because they didn't offer much unsolicited advice, I asked them for advice when I needed it.

I think my parents? beliefs that we were responsible and trustworthy became self-fulfilling prophecies. ?I have seen many cases, in other families, where the opposite set of beliefs became self-fulfilling prophecies.? I have seen kids whose parents loved them enormously?as indexed by the affection and praise showered upon the kids?but didn?t seem to respect them. ?The parents were so attached that they couldn?t let go and they paid little attention to their children?s real needs, wishes, and ideas. ?They talked down to their children, as if their short stature meant that they were stupid, even though they often told their children how smart they were.

Of course, in any discussion like this, we are to some extent playing with semantics. You might want to define love in such a way that it includes respect, and includes the ability to let go, in which case I would have to agree with you that love trumps everything.? But if we define the terms in such a way that love can exist without respect, and respect can exist without love, then I would say that bliss lies in the combination of the two, but if I had to settle for just one or the other I would choose respect.

It is useful, I think, to compare and contrast parent-child relationships with husband-wife relationships.? In both of these, respect is absolutely essential for the relationship to work. Love without respect is dangerous; it can crush the other person, sometimes literally.? To respect is to understand that the other person is not you, not an extension of you, not a reflection of you, not your toy, not your pet, not your product.? In a relationship of respect, your task is to understand the other person as a unique individual and learn how to mesh your needs with his or hers and help that person achieve what he or she wants to achieve.? Your task is not to control the other person or try to change him or her in a direction that you desire but he or she does not.? I think this applies as much to parent-child relationships as to husband-wife relationships.

Love brings bliss to both types of relationships, but only if tempered by respect.? Love adds joy and provides the emotional bonds that help carry the relationship through hard times.? The attachment aspect of love is even more valuable in our relationship with our spouse than in that with our children, because marriage, at least in principle, is forever. My children have moved on, and I had to be prepared for that right from their beginning; but my wife and I will be together until death do us part.? It is not unseemly to speak of my wife as my ?better half,? but it would be unseemly to speak of my child in such terms.? Our children do not and should not see themselves as part of us; their job is to move on, beyond us, into a future that we will never know. And if we see them as part of us, we will be torn apart when they leave.

Love is not all you need, nor all your wife or husband needs, and certainly not all your children need.? We all need respect, especially from those who are closest and most intimately connected with us.

SENKAKU ISLANDS, Japan (AP) ? Japan's territorial disputes with its neighbors flared anew on Sunday as a group of nationalist activists swam ashore and raised flags on an island also claimed by China.

Chinese took to the streets in protest, as Beijing lodged a formal complaint, urging Tokyo to prevent frictions from escalating further.

Ten Japanese made an unauthorized landing on Uotsuri, the largest in a small archipelago known in Japan as the Senkaku Islands and in China as the Diaoyu Islands. The uninhabited islands surrounded by rich fishing grounds are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan.

Of the 10 who visited the island, five were conservative local assembly members.

"The Senkakus are undoubtedly Japanese territory. It is to be expected that Japanese would take that to heart," said Eiji Kosaka, an assemblyman from Tokyo's Arakawa district.

China's Foreign Ministry protested, summoning Japan's ambassador to voice its complaints.

"The Japanese side should properly handle the current issue and avoid seriously damaging the overall situation of China-Japan relations," ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.

Tokyo rejected a complaint by China's ambassador to Japan, Cheng Yonghua, according to Japan's Foreign Ministry.

Vice Foreign Minister Kenichiro Sasae told Cheng in a phone conversation that the protests in China were "regrettable" and urged Chinese authorities to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of Japanese citizens there, the ministry said.

China's official Xinhua News Agency reported protests in cities across the country. Demonstrators burned Japanese flags, overturned or smashed Japanese-brand cars and in some places smashed windows of Japan-related businesses.

Days earlier, a group of 14 Hong Kong residents and mainland Chinese traveled by boat to the islands, some swimming ashore. Protesters in Beijing, Hong Kong and other cities praised them as heroes and burned Japanese flags, but Japan arrested the 14 for landing without authorization.

On Friday, Tokyo deported the group, seeking to quiet the regional spat. But plans for further visits by activists on both sides appear likely to further inflame the territorial tensions.

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Timothy Yang summoned Japan's de facto ambassador to Taiwan, Sumio Tarui, on Sunday to lodge a protest over the visit by the Japanese activists to the islands, which are about 190 kilometers (120 miles) off Taiwan's northeastern coast.

Yang said the "provocative act" had heightened tensions in the area, according to a ministry statement.

The spat over long-contested territories comes as China's ruling Communist Party prepares for a major leadership transition. Leaders in both China and Japan face strong domestic pressure to defend national interests.

Frictions have also flared recently over another set of disputed islands, controlled by South Korea.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visited the islands in the Sea of Japan, called Takeshima in Japanese and Dokdo in Korean, earlier this month. His visit was seen by many as an attempt to play up anti-Japan sentiment ahead of elections later this year.

In the latest move to reinforce its territorial claim, South Korea unveiled Sunday a 47-inch (120-centimeter) -tall monument in the disputed islets, emblazoned in Korean with "Dokdo" in front, "Republic of Korea" on the back and President Lee Myung-bak's name on the side.

The Japanese group that landed on Uotsuri Island on Sunday was among dozens of conservative lawmakers and activists who were visiting waters off the disputed islands over the weekend to commemorate victims of a boat accident near there at the end of World War II.

"Four days ago there was an illegal landing of Chinese people on the island ? as such we need to solidly reaffirm our own territory," said Koichi Mukoyama, a national lawmaker who was among seven conservative parliamentarians aboard a boat in the flotilla of some 20 vessels that traveled to the islands.

The lawmakers refrained from landing on Uotsuri after the government last week rejected their application to visit.

Last week's visit by the Chinese activists raised calls by critics of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government to take stronger action to protect the islands. Some lawmakers are urging that Japan's military be called on to protect the territory.

Japan says it has controlled the five main islands for more than 100 years. It has been trying to place four that are privately held under state ownership to bolster its territorial claim.
