Someone once said that science isn?t concerned with the ways of the heart. That isn?t true when it comes to some new experiments in the field of social science. Scientists are exploring what makes a happy marriage and what can cause stumbling blocks in relationships. The findings of these experiments may lead to less divorce rates, or at least may help you to smooth out some rough patches in an otherwise happy marriage.

Be Old-Fashioned, Be Happy

Some researchers at the University of Queensland have an interesting theory. They believe that the key to a happy marriage may be old-fashioned relationship techniques. No, they don?t mean the male-dominated relationships of Western cultures. The relationships they are interested in are considered the more traditional Chinese unions where the couple work together to take care of the family and supporting each other instead of employing romantic ideals of how a relationship should be.

To support their theory, the researchers point to the fact that there are far less divorces in China than in other countries that look for romantic ideals such as passion in their marriages. One major difference in Chinese and Westerner relationships is that Westerners tend to air their feelings openly, while the Chinese try to keep the peace. There is no conclusive evidence yet, and research is still ongoing, but researchers hope that their findings can be used in relationship education programs to enlighten married couples on other cultures.

More Money, More Problems

Researchers at Brigham Young University?have found that rapper Notorious BIG was right. More money does equal more problems. In their research Brigham Young University?academics found that couples that don?t place a high importance on material objects tend to have more stable marriages. While couples who admitted to being more materialistic had more money, they also had much more conflicts about money than the other couples. This could indicate that couples who tend to like material items could help their marriage by simplifying their lifestyles.

Haters Keep Hating, Lovers Keep Loving

New research may offer a look into your marriage?s future. If you fight, you?ll keep fighting says a study weird news story published in the?Journal of Family Issues by researchers at Ohio and Florida State Universities. In the study, couples conflict patterns tended to stay the same throughout their marriage. This means if you only fight with your spouse every now and then, that?s probably what you can expect throughout the marriage, which is a good thing. On the other hand, if you and your spouse are constantly fighting, don?t expect the rivalry to end any time soon. Don?t fret, though. Carrier IQ unveils tool operators can use to open up about data collected from your phone

Carrier IQ cares. Or, rather, for Carrier IQ, it's all about care. The much-maligned California analytics company has weathered the Great Privacy Scandal of 2011 and today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona announced a new product for its customers -- the operators -- to give greater transparency to consumers -- that's you and me -- regarding data being collected from your smartphones and tablets.

Let's be clear here: You are not Carrier IQ's customer. It provides network and hardware analytics capabilities to companies that sell smartphones by the millions, not folks like you and me who buy them every year or so (or, in our case, more often). That's not to say that CIQ is deaf to the recent surge in the push for privacy. Far from it. And that's not to say it hasn't learned a thing or two since everybody started to care about on-board analytics. It most certainly has.

And that brings us to today's announcement.  

Dubbed the "Customer Experience Dashboard," CIQ will begin offering -- again, to operators, not to end-users directly -- tools that the operators can then use to show their users basic fault explanations. Is your phone's battery draining? Dropping a lot of calls? Constantly rebooting? CIQ's new tools would all the operator to better explain to you what's going on with your phone, as well as with the network it's on. CIQ would essentially provide APIs to the operators, who then could build into their own websites the ability to see exactly what's going on with your phone.

It's a twofold proposition. At its core, the idea is to place some of the customer care onus back onto the customer, specifically to cut down on customer care phone calls. In other words, to help you help yourself. That, in turn, saves the operator money. It's also a great opportunity for the operator to show exactly what sort of data it's harvesting from your phone. But -- and this is a pretty big "but" -- it's up to the operator to implement any or all of this. As with Carrier IQ's current suite of products, it's completely customizable to for each operator and platform. It doesn't (and probably wouldn't) look like what you see in the picture above. Operators would be free to customize and present as much data as it sees fit, and in whatever manner it sees fit. And as of right now, it's still completely optional (and in fact will raise the cost of the CIQ platform for the operator).

For our part, we believe that would be money well spent by the operators. As much as the operators need analytics, the end-users need greater transparency. And done right (there's always a catch, right?), the operators could conceivably kill two birds with one stone here: continue to learn about the devices it supports in a real-time manner, and do so in a way that doesn't scare the hell out of its users.

Forget about the hassle, fix it and have a great time with your family.

Beef and Beer Stew with Onions

Ingredients:
3 pounds lean beef
Stew meat
6 cups sliced onions
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon thyme
1 cup water
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon HERB-OX? beef flavored bouillon granules
2 cups dark Beer, (with or without alcohol)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons water

Procedure:
Heat butter in a large skillet and brown the beef. Place browned beef in a slow cooker. Put onions and garlic to skillet and brown lightly. Add in slow cooker with beef. Add water, beef granules, thyme, beer, brown sugar, and mustard to slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW for 5-7 hours. Add cornstarch mixture to stew; continue to cook for 20 minutes or until thickened. Serves 8.

Barbecued Short Ribs

Ingredients:
6-8 short ribs, about 3 pounds
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 cup water
2 teaspoons HERB-OX? beef flavored bouillon granules
1 cup hickory smoked barbecue sauce
3tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in small amount of water

Procedure:
Over a medium high heat, brown short ribs on all sides using a large skillet. Place ribs in a crock pot and top with onions. In bowl, combine water, beef granules, barbecue sauce, brown sugar and mustard. Pour sauce over ribs. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or until tender. Add the cornstarch mixture and continue to cook 20 minutes or until sauce thickens. Serves 4 to 6.

Wild Rice and Chicken Slow Cooker Casserole

Ingredients:
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4-inch pieces
1 cup uncooked wild rice
1 cup shredded carrot
1/2 cup diced onion
2 (4-ounce) cans sliced mushrooms, drained
6 slices HORMEL? Fully Cooked Bacon, crumbled
1 cube HERB-OX? chicken bouillon, dissolved in 1 cup boiling water
1 can cream of chicken & mushroom soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Procedure:
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Place in 3 to 4-quart slow-cooker. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed. Make 6 to 8 servings.

Italian Shredded Beef Sandwiches

Ingredients:
1 (21/2-pound) boneless eye of round beef roast
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 (6-ounce) can Italian flavored tomato paste
6 teaspoons HERB-OX? beef flavored bouillon granules
1/2 cup water
12 Kaiser rolls
12 (1-ounce) slices provolone cheese

Procedure:
Place the roast in a 31/2-quart slow cooker. Add onion, tomato paste, bouillon granules and water. Cover and cook on high for 5-6 hours or until meat is tender. Remove roast from cooker. Shred meat using two forks. Return meat to cooker and stir to coat with sauce. Divide meat evenly among Kaiser rolls. Top with cheese. Make 12 servings.

An invasive plant may have saved an iconic Australian lizard species from death at the hands of toxic cane toads, according to research published in the March issue of The American Naturalist. It's an interesting case of one invasive species preparing local predators for the arrival of another, says Richard Shine, a biologist at the University of Sydney who led the research.

Cane toads were introduced in Australia in the 1930s to control beetles that destroy sugar cane crops, but the toads quickly became an ecological disaster of their own. They produce toxins called bufadienolides, which have proven deadly to many native Australian species that feed on frogs and toads.

Bluetongue lizards are one of the vulnerable species, and their numbers began to shrink significantly after the toads arrived in northern Australia. But there's reason to believe that bluetongue populations elsewhere Australia will fare better as the toads spread across the continent.

"Our study was stimulated by a puzzling observation that arose during research on the ecological impacts of invasive cane toads ? in Australia," Shine and his colleagues write. "Some lizard populations were vulnerable to bufotoxins whereas others were not?and the populations with high tolerance to bufotoxins included some that had never been exposed to toads."

Why would these populations have evolved a tolerance to the toad toxin when no toads were present?

The answer, according to Shine and his colleagues, is likely an invasive plant species known as mother-of-millions, which happens to produce a toxin that's virtually identical to that of the cane toad. After it was imported from Madagascar as a decorative plant some 70 years ago, mother-of-millions has since run amok in parts of Queensland and New South Whales and become part of the diet for local bluetongues.

Shine and his colleagues collected bluetongues from places with and without mother-of-millions, and injected each of them with a tiny amount of cane toad toxin. They found that toads from places where mother-of-millions is common had less of a reaction than those from places where it was absent. The results suggest that the plant drove strong selection for lizards that could tolerate bufotoxins?a remarkable example of evolution over a relatively short period of some 20 to 40 generations of lizards.

"Now it appears we have a population of eastern bluetongue lizards that are able to defend themselves well against cane toads?even though they've never actually met one?whereas the devastation of the cane toads on the northwestern lizard population continues," Shine said. "Eating this plant has pre-adapted the eastern blueys against cane toad poisons."

The Australian government has spent millions trying to deal with the toads and mitigate their ecological impact, but Shine's work suggests the eastern bluetongues might not need much help.

"We're now able to focus our conservation dollars on those populations that can't care for themselves," he said.

Multiple Sclerosis And Reflexology

Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive, degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, including the brain, the optic nerve, and the spinal cord. It affects people mainly over the age of 30 and appears to affect more women than men. Over 400,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with MS.
The underlying cause of MS is not known, however stress and malnutrition often precede the onset of the disease. Another theory, one that I tend to agree with is that it is caused by food allergies and intolerances to things such as dairy products, gluten and food additives.
In the early stage of the disease, the symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, blurred or double vision, loss of coordination, tingling and numbness, muscle stiffness, slurred speech, tremors and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Secondary symptoms, usually as the disease progresses, include paralysis, sexual dysfunction, urinary tract infections and weak respiration. Most people diagnosed with MS end up on drugs to control the symptoms associated with the disease. Unfortunately, this does nothing but mask the problem and does nothing to get to the root of the problem. The good news is that supplementation; dietary intervention and complimentary therapies such as reflexology have been shown effective in many studies.
Reflexology aims to prevent or treat health conditions through the application of pressure to specific points reflexes on the feet. The underlying idea of reflexology is that areas of the feet correspond to other parts of the body, and by stimulating those areas; you can heal and detoxify any part of the body. Becoming more common these days is to also apply pressure to the hands, ears and even the face.
Although reflexologists cannot diagnose or claim to cure a sickness or disease, the results speak for themselves, making it one of the most sought after treatments today. In fact, celebrities pay an arm and a leg for just a few minutes of reflexology. Not only is it beneficial as a tool for relaxation and stress relief, but it is also an effective tool for improving circulation; relieving pain, and as an immune and nervous system stimulator. In fact, many people with illnesses such as allergies; chronic sinus problems; acid reflux; acne; migraines; PMS; menopause; insomnia; fertility problems and even arthritis have been helped tremendously by reflexology treatments. I started using reflexology therapy a few years ago just for the purpose of relieving the tension headaches I was experiencing due to stress. I can attest to the fact that it works, as I have been successful at curing my headaches without the use of drugs ever since.
Reflexology has made its mark in the world of alternative therapies because it works. If you doubt that reflexology works, try it and see the results for yourself. Once you try it you will be a believer and most importantly, you will be hooked for life. Find yourself a good reflexologist, or better yet, learn the techniques for yourself. Having the knowledge to treat yourself and your family is one of the smartest things you can do. When used with your conventional medicine, it may just alleviate the symptoms that have stopped you from living your life well.

Billiards, Great Game or the Greatest | ABC Article Directory

Back in the old days, before table billiards was invented, people would play lawn games like croquet. Certainly lawn games are not the greatest games in the world, simply by way of the fact you have to rely on faithless weather conditions.

King Louis the XIV, or one of his decedents, decided that trusting the earth not to rain so he could play croquet was simply not going to do. So he commissioned his slaves-he didn't really commission them, it was more of a command- to create him an indoor version of croquet.

The result was a very simplistic version of table billiards, but instead of pockets in the corners and sides of the table there were little blocks to avoid and rings to shoot the balls through. It was basically a stupid version of croquet made to fit on a table.

King Louis loved it, and it was instantly one of the kingdoms greatest hits. You have to also understand this is France back in the mid-1400s, they didn't really have a lot going on for them.

That is the brief history of how billiards came about, intriguing that the scuzzy bar game was actually developed in royalty. With time it has developed, if it would have stayed the game it was back then it would come nowhere close to getting the "greatest game" title or even a "great game" title.

Ever since then people have been implementing new techniques and developing new billiards games, there are so many different billiards games you can't even count them all on one hand. Each game comes with unique and specific strategies, and then there are the underlying billiard techniques.

Strategy is going to be last learned, like with any other game. First you have to learn the rules of the game, and depending on the billiards game you play they will be quite different.

Then you start developing technique. This is a major reason billiards may be the greatest game in existence.

A lot of games and sports will test one's ability to push themselves to the edge of their capacity; however, billiards tests subtle skill and discipline. You do not have to be macho body builder that can throw a javelin 300 yards to be able to play this.

The playing field is level to everyone; it really is simply a measure of technique and skill. Of course some people are going to be better than others, but it is not because they have some genetic or presupposed trait that gives them an unfair advantage.

Being that the genre of sport billiards is so extensive, that it provides even advantage to each player, and is stimulating in a unique way, it is fair to say that this truly is the greatest game.
