Andrew Legrand, a Metairie lawyer who has been helping Billow and others complete the nonprofit paperwork, said he believes the move will "get all the food trucks on the same page."

"We're at a time when New Orleans has more restaurants than ever before -- I think there's thousands -- so why not have food trucks out there kind of contributing to that," said Legrand, who got involved after reading about their efforts online.

Though the movement to organize food trucks under one organization is still in its early stages in the city, mobile operators have banded together like this elsewhere across the country, said Matt Geller, who runs the Southern California Mobile Food Vendors Association, which formed in early 2010 to help navigate Los Angeles County's many regulating bodies, including four health departments.

"There was a lot of misinformation," said Geller, who had worked in restaurants and has a background in law. "Even the regulators didn't know what was going on."

The southern California group started with 29 members. Now, it has around 140, and is considering expanding statewide. Geller said he has worked with local officials there to take another look at decades-old regulations that he says had hampered mobile food vending, and led discussions on how they can be configured to get up to speed. The group has also challenged some laws in court, including the proximity that an operator can be to a restaurant, a sticking point that operators in New Orleans would also like to change.

Members of the group pay $50 dues each month, which helps fund the group's efforts to challenge unfavorable rules and has also been put toward renting lots where vendors can setup shop with one another a few nights a week, often timed in conjunction with special events nearby.

His advice for the burgeoning industry? "I would encourage all food trucks in an area to get together and try to speak in one voice," he said. "We're not going to be an underground industry and get overregulated. The trend is growing too fast to fly under the radar."

One of the most powerful parenting tips that can be shared is this: observe your child closely to recognize the ways that YOU need to grow ??

When a parent really sees how a behavior? problem demonstrated by his child replicates a pattern of his own, that parent holds a key to leading the child into better behavior. ?

A common mistake made by teachers is to "judge" a parent by the parent's superficial appearance. ?

Despite the fact that parents may appear to be wonderful people during your brief meetings with them, if their child is behaving poorly or under-performing in the classroom, you can safely presume that there is some way the parents' self-conduct contributes to the child conduct problem. ?

It pains a troubled child deeply when a teacher says things like, "Your parents are such wonderful people.? Why don't you try harder to please them (or to be like them)?" ?

On?some level the child consciously or subconsciously understands that there is something going wrong in the parent-child relationship ? so when the teacher takes the parents' "perfection" for granted the child feels more alienated, alone and despondent - which triggers poorer conduct. ?

By contrast, when the teacher understands that the child is receiving an influence at home that contributes to his school behavior problem, and enters into conversation with the student to possibly bring out what the parent problem is, the child feels relieved and inspired by the bond being built. ?

In addition, if a child, say, with an anger problem mentions during the conversation that his dad displays a lot of rage at home, the teacher can offer some coaching like, "Even if your dad is showing you a lot of anger at home, remember that you do not HAVE to? be angry like that with your classmates." ?

This can help the child better understand himself and make better choices for himself, and it further builds a positive bond between the?student and teacher that further supports the child's motivation to perform well. ?

Sometimes, after the child reveals the parent problem, the teacher can CAREFULLY offer some respectful coaching to the parent during a parent-teacher conference. ?

For instance, one elementary school teacher observed that one of her students loses emotional balance too easily and frequently, leading the child into wild, destructive, rebellious behavior.??The teacher looked for subtle signs of this coming from the parent during a teacher-parent meeting and recognized a high level of emotionalism coming from that parent. ?

The teacher gently suggested to the parent that if she modeled improved emotional balance her child would pick that up and show better self-control at school.??

This particular parent?happened to be into personal growth, recognized the validity of the teacher's suggestion and followed it. ??

As this mother progressed in her self-work, her daughter's self-control at home and at school showed improvement. ?

Admittedly, not all parents are going to be that open to a teacher's insight into how the parent might change to improve the child's school performance. ?

LONDON (AP) ? Skepticism that European Union leaders will be able to cobble together a plan to kick-start the region's faltering economy and deal with its crippling debt crisis hit stock markets hard Wednesday.

Leaders of the 27 EU countries are to meet in Brussels later in the day for a summit that will focus on Europe's economic woes and Greece's political crisis. An election on June 17 is widely considered to be a referendum on the country's membership of the euro and that's caused big jitters in the markets over the past couple of weeks.

There had nevertheless been some hope in recent days that the summit might make progress towards shoring up Europe's defenses against financial turmoil. Any enthusiasm appears to have vanished with Germany's continued refusal to back the idea of jointly-issued eurobonds. Proponents of eurobonds say they could help mitigate the crisis by spreading debt risk across the single currency zone.

"Hopes for today's EU summit have been well and truly chucked out of the window, as the Germans once again state their firm opposition to eurozone bonds as a means of solving the crisis," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was 1.8 percent lower at 5,305, while Germany's DAX lost 1.7 percent to 6,328. The CAC-40 in France was 1.9 percent lower at 3,025.

The euro was also under pressure, trading 0.1 percent lower at $1.2650, near four-month lows.

Wall Street was headed for a retreat, too, with both Dow futures and the S&P 500 futures down 0.7 percent.

Europe's battle to contain its debt crisis, now well into its third year, is likely to remain the focus of attention all the way up to and beyond the Greek election.

The main concern is that political parties that are against the terms of the country's bailout package winning will win the election. If Europe then cuts off its funding to Greece, the country may face a messy exit from the euro, raising concerns among investors that other countries might follow. Some analysts say a Greek exit would herald the beginning of the end of the euro and could slam the global economy.

Another big worry for investors is a slowdown in Chinese growth, compounded by a reluctance of Chinese companies to borrow because of uncertainty about the economy.

Those concerns dented sentiment earlier in Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 index tumbled 2 percent to close at 8,556.60, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.3 percent to 18,786.19 and South Korea's Kospi lost 1.1 percent at 1,808.62.

Oil prices tracked equities lower, with benchmark oil for July delivery down 88 cents at $90.97 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

May 22, 2012 - It took the Nevada State Athletic Commission roughly 40 minutes to decide that Chael Sonnen should be given permission to inject himself with testosterone in the weeks before a title fight with UFC champ Anderson Silva this summer. It took the same regulatory body about three hours to decide that Nick Diaz should pay for his marijuana use with a year-long suspension and 30 percent of his last fight purse.

If you think those decisions made the sport of mixed martial arts cleaner and/or safer, then I want to know where you got that prescription for whatever it is you?re smoking.

The NSAC told us -- as well as the fighters it regulates -- a lot about how it plans to handle the issues of both recreational drugs and performance-enhancing ones in the future. Matt Lindland, his former manager, told him to. Sonnen said Lindland claimed to have spoken to executive director Keith Kizer, been given the green light, and was then told "don?t bring it up again."

"If I understand what your testimony has been it?s that, you claim that your manager told you that Keith Kizer said, ?You got an exemption, don?t tell anybody about it, don?t bring it up, lie on your form as to whether you?re taking this prescription.? Is that your contention?" Lundvall asked.

"No, I wouldn?t use those words," Sonnen replied. "I certainly wouldn?t use the word ?lie.?"

And why would you? It?s such a nasty word. It has all kinds of negative connotations. Lying on a pre-fight medical form is serious business. Just ask former Strikeforce champ Mo Lawal. He failed to mention his knee injury and the use of a supplement to aid that injury on the exact same questionnaire, and it didn?t go well for him when he got his day in court with the commission to address a positive steroid test. If only he?d known enough to blame Lindland.

Amazingly, this was all it took for the commission to skip over Sonnen?s prior history of non-disclosure. Lundvall asked whether he had "any qualms" about signing his name to a form that didn?t mention the testosterone he was using. Sonnen said he didn?t. Really? Lundvall wanted know. No qualms at all? Not even a hint of qualms? Nope. Sonnen was qualms-free. He had come before the commission completely qualms-less.

And that was that. On to other business.

Okay, so it wasn?t that simple. There was also a doctor (not an endocrinologist, but who's keeping track?) who called in to say that he believed Sonnen was indeed suffering from low testosterone as a result of secondary hypogonadism. Sonnen answered some questions about how and when he ingested the testosterone, agreed to submit to increased testing -- including a test the morning after the fight -- and then the commission decided that everything was in order. It even praised his honesty and asked if he would be willing to serve "in an advisory capacity to Mr. Kizer." Sonnen, ever the magnanimous gentleman, said that he would. Exemption granted.

Funny thing about the morning-after testing, which seemed to ease so many concerns for the commission. According to BALCO founder and doping expert Victor Conte, such testing is pretty close to useless. As Conte wrote in an email statement on Tuesday:

"Anyone who understands how anabolic steroids work knows that an athlete does not perform at their peak while using steroids. For example, sprinters actually run much slower while on steroids because they cause muscle tightness. Steroids work by a process known as cell volumization and this makes an athlete's muscles tight or ?pumped,? which actually reduces functional muscle performance. The peak performance gains come 10-14 days after tapering off of testosterone. This is when an athlete becomes much more explosive and significantly faster. So testing an athlete at a time when he has tapered off a substance on purpose to maximize the performance benefits makes little sense. The period from 10 weeks out from a fight until 2 weeks out should be the targeted drug testing period. The NSAC seems to lack a basic understanding of the way testosterone is used by athletes."

Fortunately, however, it?s not going to let anyone get away with puffing weed, which might give them an unfair advantage by relaxing them during training. That was just one of the many stances the commission took when it was Diaz?s turn to make his case. While Diaz?s lawyer argued the distinctions between in-competition and out-of-competition use, as well as the differences between marijuana and marijuana metabolites, the commission remained unmoved. It had made up its mind on Diaz, and wasn?t about to change it.

While UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem got a nine-month suspension for elevated levels of testosterone -- a substance whose performance-enhancing capabilities are so well known they don?t even need to be argued over -- Diaz got a full year for a substance that seems to be performance-enhancing only in the sense that he enjoys using it. Maybe he should have claimed that his doctor slipped it to him by accident. It?s possible Diaz and his legal team could have made things easier on themselves if their strategy hadn?t involved challenging that commission?s entire mode of thinking when it comes to marijuana usage. Trying to get an athletic commission to not only admit that it?s wrong, but also to admit that it has been on this issue wrong for many years? That?s a tough sell. If the commissioners can find a reason to maintain the status quo, they will. Apparently they?ll also lay the smack down on whoever tries to challenge them on it.

Whether you believe Diaz legitimately has a marijuana-shaped loophole here -- or, for that matter, whether you believe that Sonnen legitimately has low testosterone -- it?s hard to look at these two rulings and call them helpful, let alone fair. If the sport isn?t harmed by allowing one athlete to artificially increase his levels of a powerful hormone, how is it harmed by allowing another to use one of the least harmful recreational drugs around? If one man?s history of deception can be easily explained by putting the blame entirely on someone else, then how severely can another man be punished for smoking first and asking permission second?

The justice handed down by state athletic commissions has often seemed arbitrary and capricious. The Nevada commission is particularly hard to figure at times, especially when it praises the honesty of those who it accused of lying just minutes before.

On Monday the commission gave us still more mysteries of judgement and justice to think about. It also gave a useful tip to all the fighters out there who are looking for an edge, or even just a buzz: ask first. Who knows? You might even get yourself a gig advising the commission as to how it should regulate that substance you want to use. And wouldn't that be nice.

In a new study published in the journal Nuclear Medicine Communicationsⁱ, researchers found that fluoride may be associated with an increased cardiovascular risk as it causes hardening of your arteries.

Reviewing the imaging data and cardiovascular history of patients who received whole-body sodium fluoride PET scans, the researchers found a significant correlation between a history of cardiovascular events and presence of fluoride uptake in coronary arteries.

While there are certainly many factors contributing to the rise in heart disease?poor diet likely being the most important?it certainly doesn?t help to add a chemical to water supplies that will be consumed by everyone in the area regardless of health status, from toddlers to seniors, that might contribute to the problem.

The primary issue here is that there?s a lack of evidence supporting the use of fluoride, and an awful lot of evidence stacked against the indiscriminate use of it, including these latest findings.

The practice of adding fluoride to tap water began in 1945. With more than 70 percent of U.S. public water supplies currently fluoridated, chances are you?re one of the 170 million Americans who drink and bathe in fluoride on a daily basis.ⁱⁱ

From there, it enters your body?s cellular tissues. On average, about 50 percent of the fluoride you ingest each day gets excreted through your kidneys.

Whether this happens or not is highly dependent on the presence of calcium, magnesium, Vitamin C, and selenium in your bloodstream, to which the fluoride will bind so that it no longer is seeking calcium-rich tissues that make up so much of your body. The remainder accumulates in your teeth and bones,ⁱⁱⁱ pineal gland,^iv and other tissues, including your blood vessels.

Fluoride uptake in coronary arteries was demonstrated in 28 (46%) patients and coronary calcifications were observed in 34 (56%) patients.?

The amount deposited into your bones and teeth varies depending on your age. In children, more than 50 percent of an ingested dose of fluoride is deposited in bone, but in adults only about 10 percent is stored there. As the number of research studies into the toxic effects of fluoride has increased, there is now support for a rather long list of potential health problems related to fluoride accumulation in your body.

Fluoride?the Toxic Drug in Your Water Supply

Prior to 1945 when communal water fluoridation took effect, fluoride was a known toxin. For example, a 1936 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association stated that fluoride at the 1 ppm (part per million) concentration is as toxic as arsenic and lead. The Journal of the American Medical Association stated in their September 18, 1943 issue, that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons that change the permeability of the cell membrane by certain enzymes.^xiii And, an editorial published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, October 1, 1944, stated:

?Drinking water containing as little as 1.2 ppm fluoride will cause developmental disturbances. We cannot run the risk of producing such serious systemic disturbances. The potentialities for harm outweigh those for good.?

How community water fluoridation ended up being so widely implemented, and eventually even became heralded as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century, is explained in-depth in Christopher Bryson?s book The Fluoride Deception.^xiv In it, he describes the intertwined interests that existed in the 1940?s and 50?s between the aluminum industry, the U.S. nuclear weapons program, and the dental industry, which resulted in fluoride being declared not only safe, but beneficial to human health. Once you understand the historical context, it becomes easier to grasp why anyone would ever promote water fluoridation as ?a good idea.?

Due to the massive amounts of fluoride required to produce bomb-grade uranium and plutonium for nuclear weapons, the Manhattan Project conducted various experiments to determine its toxic effects in 1946.

There were already several instances on record of fluoride being toxic to crops, livestock and people living downwind from the polluters, so the public concern over fluoride emissions needed to be quelled in order to avoid potentially crippling lawsuits.

Within the now declassified files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission, Christopher Bryson found that the toxicology department at the University of Rochester, under the direction of Harold Hodge, was asked to produce medical information about fluoride that could help defend the government against lawsuits where they were charged with fluoride pollution. Back in 1957, Harold Hodge was the nation?s leading, most trusted scientist, and when he declared that fluoride was ?absolutely safe? at 1 ppm, everyone believed him.

So, the endorsement of fluoride as a nutrient that will grace you with brilliant pearly whites, rather than the poison it really is, was born from the need to address increasingly debilitating political and industrial problems relating to fluoride pollution. The rest, as they say, is history.

The first one of these, sodium fluoride, was the first of the fluoride waste materials to be used for fluoridation, but now is rarely used. It?s the most well known, as this is the compound used as pharmaceutical grade in toxicology studies and other research into the potential health dangers of fluoride. The other two, sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluorosilicic acid, are the compounds actually used for water fluoridation, with hydrofluorosilicic acid being the most commonly used additive, according to the CDC.^xvi Sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluorosilicic acid are the waste products from the wet scrubbering systems of the fertilizer industry, and are classified as hazardous wastes. Contamination with various impurities such as arsenic is also common in these products.

The Way Forward: Shifting the Burden of Proof

Still despite all the evidence, getting fluoride out of American water supplies has been exceedingly difficult. And it?s no wonder, really, when you factor in the considerable liability the U.S. government could face were they to suddenly admit that water fluoridation was a way to hide toxic pollution, and there are detrimental health effects associated with drinking these pollutants?

Fortunately, there is a way forward.

According to Jeff Green, National Director of Citizens for Safe Drinking Water, a repeated theme in some of the recent cases where communities successfully removed fluoride from their water supply is the shifting of the burden of proof. Rather than citizens taking on the burden of proving that fluoride is harmful and shouldn?t be added, a more successful strategy has been to hold those making claims and the elected officials who rely on them, accountable for delivering proof that the specific fluoridation chemical being used fulfills their health and safety claims, and is in compliance with all regulations, laws, and risk assessments already required for safe drinking water.

For example, a couple of years ago, a Tennessee town stopped adding the hydrofluosilicic acid fluoride product they had been using, while still keeping its resolution to fluoridate its water supplies intact (meaning they didn?t make a decision on whether it might be harmful). They just haven?t been able to find a replacement product that is compliant with existing laws, regulations and safe-water requirements, and they will not add any fluoride product that is not in compliance. In summary it would seem like most rational people would conclude you should avoid using fluoride for its ?preventive? benefits. You can easily choose not to take fluoride supplements or buy fluoride-free toothpaste and mouthwash. You can also dramatically reduce your fluoride exposure by opting for organic foods, on which fluoride-based pesticides are not permitted to be used. However, you?re still going to be stuck with whatever your community puts in the water, and as discussed, it?s very difficult to filter out of your water once it?s added. Many do not have the resources or the knowledge to do so.

It?s really time to stop the archaic practice of water fluoridation.

Earlier this year I joined forces with Dr. Paul Connett to help put an END to water fluoridation in the U.S and Canada. The Fluoride Action Network has a game plan to do just that. Our fluoride initiative will primarily focus on Canada since 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. If we can get Calgary and the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow. Quikr, India's largest online and mobile classifieds portal, announced today that it has raised $32 million in series E financing, led by New York City-based private equity giant Warburg Pincus.
