NUTRITION JARGON: Who Could You Be? Dream Big!

Eating disorders, disordered eating, anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, night eating syndrome, and diabulimia are all disorders ?related to how our patients manage?and feel about their food intake. These disorders are tremendously overwhelming, all consuming, exhausting, totally disruptive to the patients, their family, school or job, friends, and future life plans.

The inner strength and extensive?effort required to overcome an eating disorder is astonishingly high, taxing and long-term.?The earlier you start counseling to establish a healthy relationship with food, the sooner you can expect an improvement in behaviors.

The tremendous rewards of being a nutrition counselor are watching your patients improve their health and fitness. Over 30 years of working with eating disorder patients I have had the opportunity of watching many move to a healthier lifestyle.
This past week-end, I had the opportunity to attend the Oklahoma Eating Disorder Association state meeting. The highlight of the meeting was hearing?the keynote speaker Melissa Rhodes, my?former patient, share her journey of recovery from anorexia. Melissa?grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from OCU. She struggled for years with body images issues, anorexia, over-exercising and?bulimia. Melissa was cast in a television series on the Food Network- Worst Cooks In America, which was filmed in New York City and aired February 2012.?She recalls that being a part of this show helped her appreciate working with and eating great quality food.

Melissa's presentation was informative, very motivating and incorporated her great sense of humor.?

Comments from Melissa's blog: ?www.promiseillwrite.com
"The only way I could step into recovery out of disaster was to realize the entire problem was in my head. The entire problem wasn't with the world, it wasn't even sitting next to me--it had been created in my head."
Melissa found the strength to take ownership of her situation. She realized she created and?owned her problem therefore she had the power to fix it.
Recover from anything ...an eating disorder, binge eating, mindless eating, over-eating etc requires focus!
Melissa stated,"You cannot focus on someone or something when you've got a tornado of thoughts/feelings whirling in your head 24/7. It's clearly easier to hit a target if you're focusing on it!"
My professional response to this very simple and important insight is "Duuuh". This is not rocket science folks, but so many of us fail to?focus on personal health goals, directing our focus and?goals?for business achievements, school achievements, financial achievements.

Melissa's parting words were, "Dream Big! Dream Really Big! Picture yourself without the eating disorder...who could you be?

Melissa would love to hear from each?of you interested in eating disorders. She is very committed?to reaching out to those who are struggling. She wants to?provide support through her website www.promiseillwrite.com?and giving public presentations.?cb
