Back in the old days, before table billiards was invented, people would play lawn games like croquet. Certainly lawn games are not the greatest games in the world, simply by way of the fact you have to rely on faithless weather conditions.

King Louis the XIV, or one of his decedents, decided that trusting the earth not to rain so he could play croquet was simply not going to do. So he commissioned his slaves-he didn't really commission them, it was more of a command- to create him an indoor version of croquet.

The result was a very simplistic version of table billiards, but instead of pockets in the corners and sides of the table there were little blocks to avoid and rings to shoot the balls through. It was basically a stupid version of croquet made to fit on a table.

King Louis loved it, and it was instantly one of the kingdoms greatest hits. You have to also understand this is France back in the mid-1400s, they didn't really have a lot going on for them.

That is the brief history of how billiards came about, intriguing that the scuzzy bar game was actually developed in royalty. With time it has developed, if it would have stayed the game it was back then it would come nowhere close to getting the "greatest game" title or even a "great game" title.

Ever since then people have been implementing new techniques and developing new billiards games, there are so many different billiards games you can't even count them all on one hand. Each game comes with unique and specific strategies, and then there are the underlying billiard techniques.

Strategy is going to be last learned, like with any other game. First you have to learn the rules of the game, and depending on the billiards game you play they will be quite different.

Then you start developing technique. This is a major reason billiards may be the greatest game in existence.

A lot of games and sports will test one's ability to push themselves to the edge of their capacity; however, billiards tests subtle skill and discipline. You do not have to be macho body builder that can throw a javelin 300 yards to be able to play this.

The playing field is level to everyone; it really is simply a measure of technique and skill. Of course some people are going to be better than others, but it is not because they have some genetic or presupposed trait that gives them an unfair advantage.

Being that the genre of sport billiards is so extensive, that it provides even advantage to each player, and is stimulating in a unique way, it is fair to say that this truly is the greatest game.
