Many users also keep a lot of extremely important and sensitive personal data and contact information in their devices. The physical loss of a person?s communication device can be an extremely frustrating and emotionally draining experience. Whether a cell phone or PDA is left at a restaurant, physically damaged or even stolen, being without it is no fun. Handheld devices have become amazingly sophisticated. Although they are extremely useful to store information on, one is well advised to not use them as the sole repository for vital information. It is really easy in the hustle and bustle of our fast paced lives to forget to back up phone numbers, addresses and other critical information.

One should have a weekly if not daily routine of backing up important information into another computer. Keeping sensitive personal and financial information in your mobile device can be risky. It is worth considering the trade off of having the information handy vs. the risk of having it stolen.

You may want to consider password protecting your personal device in case of theft. You can also use antivirus software to help protect it from viruses. Many are being introduced into handheld devices through emails and malicious code in otherwise attractive appearing applications.

According to a recent article at CNN.com, work-issued mobile devices are emerging as a key security risk. This problem is significant enough that 95% of companies now have a mobile security policy in place. Unfortunately, two-thirds of employees are not aware of what their employers? policies are.

People using company issued phones with sensitive information on them should become familiar with the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). It is a unique 17 or 15 digit code which is useful in preventing a stolen handset from accessing a network to place calls. A mobile phone user whose phone has been stolen may contact their mobile network provider and request that they disable their phone using its IMEI number.

Handheld devices are rapidly evolving and becoming more useful. They are essentially becoming full blown computers that fit into a pocket or purse. We need to remember that they are exposed to many of the same potential viruses as a computer is.

Physically, a handheld has a greater risk of being broken or stolen than a desktop computer. By taking the necessary precautions, one can protect it and reduce the chances of losing it or having the information stolen.
