PGT: Couples picks Tiger for Presidents Cup

Well, the cat is out of the bag. Actually, he?s in it.

American Presidents Cup team captain Fred Couples told Tiger Woods that he will be one of his two captain?s picks to round out his squad that will compete at Royal Melbourne in November.

?I?ve told him that he?s going to be on the team,? Couples said at the Champions Tour?s Boeing Classic on Thursday, according to the AP. ?There is no reason for me to wait till Sept. 26 to pick Tiger. He?s the best player in the world forever.?

The announcement comes a week after Couples stipulated Woods? selection to the American team with more appearances before the matches. Woods said in a blog post on his website that he was considering options to play in the PGA Tour?s Fall Series after the FedEx Cup is decided.

Couples tells the AP he has been reassured Woods will likely honor his request.

?He has responded to that. I?m pretty sure you?ll see him one more time,? Couples said. ?That?s enough for me. I know the last thing he wants to do is embarrass himself. I think he?ll be ready to play. Does that mean he?s going to go out and win every point? No, I don?t expect that. But I expect him to be sharp and ready to play. I would be shocked if he?s not.?

Woods is in 28th on the points list to qualify for the team. Not scheduled to play between now and when the ten automatic qualifiers for the team are determined on September 26, the only way for Woods to play on the team would be thanks to a selection from Couples.

Previously, Couples had stipulated any captain?s pick to his team would need to play the Australian Open in Sydney the week prior to the Presidents Cup. Woods obliged, opting to play there for the first time since 1996 ? with a hearty appearance fee helping smooth over the deal.
