Electronic Arts has paid an undisclosed sum to acquire Firemint, an Australian company that makes games for Apple's iPod, iPad and iPhone mobile devices.
Firemint is headquartered in Melbourne and employs 60 people. It has self-published four titles -- Flight Control, Real Racing, Real Racing 2 and Agent Squeek -- though many more are in the pipeline.
Separately on Tuesday, EA competitor THQ disappointed Wall Street with a quarterly earnings report that revealed a $44 million loss, compared with red ink of $10 million a year ago. Revenue fell 37% to $124 million.
Shares of THQ closed 3% higher to $4.12 during regular trading but dipped 6% in the after-hours session.
Brisk sales of the game Homefront was the fiscal fourth-quarter standout, CEO Brian Farrell said.
"We have already shipped 2.6 million units, a solid start for this new franchise," he said.
Upcoming releases in the current quarter include SpongeBob SquigglePants, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rio.
