COLOGNE, Germany - IFC's Sundance Selects label has acquired Wolfgang Murnberger's World War II tragicomedy My Best Enemy for U.S. release from sales group Beta Cinema.
The feature stars Moritz Bleibtreu as the son of a wealthy Jewish Austrian art dealer who pretends to be a Nazi to escape the concentration camps. My Best Enemy premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.? The U.S. deal was negotiated and signed in Cannes by Sundance Selects' Arianna Bocco and Lizzie Nastro with Beta Cinema?s Dirk Schuerhoff.
Beta also closed several pre-sales in Cannes for Agnieszka Holland?s In Darkness, a true-life tale of Polish Jews who survived World War II in the sewers of Lvov. Metrodome picked up the title for the U.K., Roadshow took Australia/New Zealand, Cine Video bought Mexican rights, Alta took Spain, Lev Cinemas took Isreal, Edko bought the film for Hong Kong? and Champs Lis International acquired it for China. In Darkness has already pre-sold to Sony Classics for the U.S..
Another strong pre-seller was German post-apocalypitic thriller Hell from first-timer Tim Fehlbaum, which Beta sold to Russia ?s Carmen Film and to China ?s Champs Lis.? Roland Emmerich is executive producing.
Other titles Beta closed in Cannes include soccer film Lessons of a Dream starring Daniel Bruehl, which Gaga grabbed for Japan; German culture class comedy Almanya bought by Moonlight Films (Benelux), Lightbox (Greece), BMP (South Korea) and Swallow Wings (Taiwan) and Spanish feature Black Bread which sold to Japan (Alcine Terran) and China (Champs Lis).?
