Hotel Stays ? How I Enhance My Room When on a Holiday ...

Holiday Vacations and Trimming the Room

When traveling over the holidays, you can decorate and trim your hotel room or suite to fit the occasion. Make it as homelike and comfortable as possible. Throughout the year, my family and I travel over the holidays and our hotels become our holiday home. The following suggestions are for seasonal holiday travel (Thanksgiving/XMAS/summer). You can customize the suggestions to fit any holiday season or event with a little creativity, found objects from nature, and inexpensive items from any craft or antique store.

First, most major hotel chains (Comfort Inn Suites, Howard Johnson, Holiday Inn, Best Western), have adequate grounds and landscaping to find many natural decorations. Second, most of these hotels are located near malls and shopping districts.

Thanksgiving: Use found pine cones, boughs, fallen tree limbs, acorns, chestnuts, autumn leaves, etc. to create a beautiful centerpiece. You can arrange the found objects in a basket, a coffee filter, vase and place the arranged piece on the writing desk or table in the room. You can place a candle in the center, a bow, or a small vase. You might want to place the found objects around the room on tables, dressers, nightstands. You can buy the candles, ribbon, bows, and vases at local stores in the mall or in a downtown shopping district.

At this time of the year, most of the craft and home stores have sales on their products: Michael?s, AC Moore, Pottery Barn, Linen and Things, Bed Bath & Beyond, local antique and craft stores. This is a plus for you especially if your stay includes Black Friday.

You can also hang a pine branch or bough over the door or on the window with string or ribbon. By placing a few scented candles around the room, you can add ambiance and fragrance.

XMAS: The same tips apply as for Thanksgiving. You can decorate from nature or from sale or clearance items from stores in the local shopping areas. Don?t? forget to enjoy the hotel?s decorated lobby areas. Why not enjoy a cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa in front of their tree or fireplace as well as in your quarters. These areas are very comfortable and cozy. If you?re in the true holiday spirit, you can purchase a small 3-4? or tabletop artificial tree and place it in your room. Upon leaving, you can donate the items to the local Salvation Army, shelter, or other non- profit agency or give it to family members you are visiting.

Another tip is to join in a local tradition or event where you are staying: The lighting of the town?s tree, caroling, storytelling, or just contact the local museum or public library for a list of free and pay events to attend.

Easter: There are loads of items to buy at Easter time or to make from kits sold at craft stores. Even if you can?t enjoy the real decorated hard cooked eggs in your basket, fill it with other items that you and your family enjoy. Some suggestions: Fruit and nuts, healthy chips and dips, fruit in season, hobby baskets, arts and crafts, games and toys, and finally candy and healthy granola and fruit bars. Of course, don?t forget the Easter Bunny and stuffed animals. Again, if you can?t take these items home with you donate them to a shelter, Salvation Army or other non-profit agency in the area.

Summer (June-August): During the warm months, you can collect seashells, driftwood, starfish, and other found items on the beach (if you are in a beach area) to decorate your room. Also from a local craft store, you can buy or bead your own necklaces and bracelets to string and decorate your room. Why not buy a potted artificial or real plant and set it in the room? The idea is to make your room as cheerful and bright as possible, especially during extended stays. Don?t forget fish netting for that nautical sea fare charm. Last but not least, July 4th?go wild with Old Glory and red, white, and blue streamers and all. Remember, to attend the local fireworks display and celebrate the 4th of July with the town you are visiting.

Check mall listings and events at the Customer Service Center: Local malls hold many events to attend when you are visiting away from home (concerts, book readings, food preparation). Many of the stores (cookware, cuisine, beauty salons, craft, department store and other) have workshops and 1-2 hour events to attend. Check with the mall?s customer service to see what stores are located in the shopping area. Visit the store and check their calendar of events. You will be surprised to see what you can fill your schedule with during these holiday times at these stores.

Most of all Have a Safe and Happy Trip-Don?t be Afraid to Mingle? Enjoy Your Stay Wherever You Are.
